THE Comic Vine Review by Tony 'G-Man' Guerrero

Cable is back. So is his big gun. Guess what he's going to do with his gun? It's the start of a bigger story and Cable is declaring war on the Avengers.

We've been hearing about the Avengers and the X-Men fighting each other. Before that happens, Cable is going after the Avengers himself.
The Good

Cable is back. This could be good or bad news for comic readers. He made the ultimate sacrifice to save his 'daughter' Hope. I'm not sure if anyone really loves comic book deaths but they're made even worse when the character returns from the dead too quickly. From the preview images, we know this is Cable. We know it's an older Cable. I won't go into details of how Cable arrived or when he's possibly from but I will say I was okay with the explanation. I touched on this subject before and have no problem with his return.

Why is Cable and the Avengers fighting? It's all explained. It makes sense. What readers will be looking for is a big superhero on superhero fighting action. That's what we get. Or at least we get the beginning of that since this is a four-issue miniseries.

Jeph Loeb's writing of Cable fits, as does his portrayal of the Avengers in this issue. The important thing for readers to accept the return of Cable is the way he's written. Cable is a hero and has worked with many of these heroes before. We need to believe in why things play out the way they do. Ed McGuinness has drawn plenty of big action books before and you can see that is what he intends to deliver here.
The Bad

Was I looking forward to this too much or was it a fast read? The reason for Cable's attack does make sense but then again, would Cable really do these things? It is the first issue of the miniseries and it could be too early to tell. You can't help trying to shake the feeling that the series will be resolved as most superhero versus superhero battles do. Will the Avengers and Cable get along by issue #4? It's possible they won't considering one element mentioned in this issue and the fact that 'Avengers Vs X-Men' is coming next year.

I do really like McGuinness' art. He did a great job on everyone except Captain America look a little too bulky at times. He is a defined guy but he shouldn't be close to Cable's size.

It could just be because this is the first issue but it wasn't fully clear how much time passed in between a couple incidents. How much time did Cable spend preparing for his plan of attack? Actually, there is a period of time mentioned but I wonder if that's enough time for all the details. Perhaps Cable is simply that good at throwing together a plan.
The Verdict

Just in time for the holidays, Cable makes his return after about a year and a half. Setting the stage for a bigger event, Cable has targeted the Avengers and isn't holding back. The biggest risk with this series is explaining how Cable could return after being dead and Jeph Loeb does a good job. It's not as simple or straight forward as some might think and his reasons for going after the Avengers makes sense. Ed McGuinness is a great choice for a series that's bound to contain some crazy action. With the exception of Captain America at times, everything looks great. Each page almost has a vibrant feel when McGuinness' pencils are combined with Dexer Vines' inks and Morry Hollowell's colors. It's a great-looking book with the promise of some major butt-kicking in the issues to come. If there were any doubts over Loeb and McGuinness bringing back Cable, everyone can rest at ease now. It felt a little short but it could just be that my appetite has been whetted and now I need more.

No, non mi è piaciuto particolarmente Ultimatum: troppo rumore per nulla, e una carneficina che si poteva evitare secondo me.

Finch, poi, l'ho trovato molto tirato: alcuni personaggi erano disegnati allo stesso modo, e in alcune tavole ho fatto una confusione assurda.

Clod

ho buone aspettative per questa mini :ahsisi:

We are called Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak. Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced. Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed. Weaknesses like... emotions, pain. You will become like us. You will be upgraded.

X-Sanction #1 Second Print Covers In Glorious Black And White

Here are the second print covers to X-Sanction #1, being rushed to stores by Marvel for the last week in December, and before the second issue of this AVX prequel ships in early January. So quickly, it seems, all the colouring fell off.

Mr. Seven

Torna!!!) è stupenda, è migliorato in maniera spropositata.
- Oh, al diavolo, non mi interessa una vecchiaia serena. Non è mai stato il nostro stile. Vogliamo essere ricordati nel fiore degli anni. Sei pronto?
- Io sono pronto. Tu?

Before "Avengers vs. X-Men," the Avengers need to get past Cable and, so far, he's taken out Captain America and Falcon. The simplicity of "Avengers: X-Sanction" is one of its greatest strengths. Not much happens except Cable getting ready to fight or fighting members of the Avengers, and Cable reflecting upon Hope, his adopted daughter and reason for attacking the Avengers. This comic isn't just easy to understand as a whole conceptually, every page reminds you what the point is. In the midst of that, Jeph Loeb returns to some of his pet interests with Cable to drive the story forward, making for a satisfying reading experience.

Loeb's tenure on "Cable" lasted from just before "The Age of Apocalypse" to just after "Onslaught," and, during that run, Cable's techno-organic virus became one of the central ideas. His struggle to contain and control the virus played a large part, so it's no surprise to see Loeb returning to that in this event. Cable only has three things on his mind (the Avengers, Hope, and the virus) and each plays into the other. That basic presentation of the character on display makes Cable easy to understand; the simple rhythm of his thought process and desires gives the issue a steady pace that Loeb and Ed McGuinness use to suck the reader in and surprise at key moments.

Iron Man is the Avenger that Cable fights this issue and Loeb draws upon one distinct advantage Cable has over all of the Avengers to give him the edge: time travel. It's Cable using armor Tony Stark hasn't invented yet versus Iron Man. Really, it's an excuse to add a little tech to Cable's look and have him slug it out with Iron Man, something McGuinness depicts rather well. He makes a surprising choice in not having Cable don the full armor, only the gloves, boots, and chest plate. It seems like the wrong move at first, but it makes a lot of sense: what's the point of Cable fighting Iron Man if Cable doesn't look like himself?

The entire issue is that basic, that direct. Cable's memories of Hope come off as over-the-top melodramatic because they're so sincere. He's almost hard to buy as a character because of that purity of vision and drive. There's no shade of grey with the character or anything in the comic. Part of enjoying this comic is being able to get over the urge to make sarcastic jokes and roll your eyes. It's an all or nothing experience.

Halfway in, "Avengers: X-Sanction" is proving an entertaining read. Cable taking down the Avengers one by one has had some nice surprises and the storytelling's directness and clarity is refreshing. Jeph Loeb's previous experience writing Cable is one of the reasons why the writing is so sincere and direct. He knows the character and doesn't need to work his way into his head or get to know him as he writes the story. This series was sold as Cable vs. the Avengers and, so far, it's living up to that hype.

Cable is determined to stop the Avengers at any cost in order to save his 'daughter' Hope. With flashbacks to the future (huh?), more is revealed on Cable's return and there are more guest appearances as well.
It's Cable versus the Avengers but that's not all. There are some others coming to join the party.

The Good
You might have heard about the upcoming event, Avengers Vs. X-Men. Splashed across the cover, we're reminded that it's only two months away. This miniseries is clearly leading up to that event.

When Cable seemingly sacrificed himself for Hope at the end of Second Coming, it turned out he wasn't dead just yet. Seeing an apocalyptic future because the Avengers were responsible for Hope not being alive to prevent it, Cable made it his final mission to prevent Hope's demise. Having already fought (and defeated) Falcon, Captain America and Iron Man, Cable now has to face Red Hulk. He doesn't have much time and that makes him even more desperate (and dangerous).

With Cable's return, there were some questions as to how he made it back to the present and where he got all his weapons. Those answers are revealed and more questions are raised. They're pretty big ones and with the fast paced nature of this series, they might have to wait until AVENGERS VS. X-MEN begins in order to be answered.

Spiacente, ma non sei autorizzato a visualizzare il contenuto degli spoiler.

The Bad
We're getting some nice action scenes and some cool little seeds (from the future) but there are some parts that feel off. This entire miniseries is the comic book cliché of superhero fighting superhero. Cable doesn't have a lot of time and is a strategist. Would attacking the Avengers individually be more efficient than actually trying to talk to them? Yes, that'd be a boring miniseries but it's still hard to overlook.

I don't think the image used for the cover was the right choice. That's something better left for the interiors.

Spiacente, ma non sei autorizzato a visualizzare il contenuto degli spoiler.

The Verdict
We're over halfway through the miniseries. Cable has already fought Falcon, Captain America and Iron Man. Cable's fight with Red Hulk is providing some interesting tidbits along with the flashback (to the future before he arrived in the present and...you get the idea) where we find out how Cable returned and where he got his weapons. We all love a good superhero vs. superhero fight but this is starting to feel a little forced. Cable is desperate and perhaps not thinking rationally but it's almost too much. It will be interesting to see how the events here will fully lead into AVENGERS VS. X-MEN and what Cable's final (?) fate will be.

One by one, Cable has been picking off the Avengers, but in "Avengers: X-Sanction" #4, he faces a marvelous team-up featuring Wolverine and Spider-Man. The duo is trying to locate their teammates and their search brings them to Blaquesmith's freighter in the Hudson where they find Cable, Cyclops and Hope waiting for them.

Without any true super villains in the fight, the story is powered by heroes fighting heroes and the wonderfully clichéd "misunderstanding" plot, but in this case it's a precursor of things to come. It's classic, popcorn movie type fighting forcing this comic to be sparse on panels but big on action, celebrating the lack of budgetary restriction by letting Ed McGuiness go crazy drawing up wallpaper-worthy visual spectacles -- one of which comes in the form of a redheaded woman surrounded by a flaming bird. It's not surprising considering the impending explosive event coming in just a few weeks, but nonetheless, when drawn by McGuiness, the imagery is something to be enjoyed, studied and cherished.

McGuiness also plays around with some other layouts, delivering a series of panels depicting the Avengers fighting Cable as exclamation points punctuated by the reactions of Cyclops and Hope in the tittles underneath. There's another page with a particularly emotional moment but looks like the cover of a classic comic. It's quite clear McGuiness is having fun in his collaboration with Jeph Loeb and it makes for a fun read.

In fact, Loeb is having fun in his own right, evident in the banter between Wolverine and Spider-Man. Light and sassy, as should be expected from the duo under Loeb's pen, Spider-Man cracks wise, Wolverine calls him on it and the cycle continues. Spider-Man doesn't factor into this issue as much as Wolverine does, but in that regard, Loeb is able to give Spidey a few more concentrated classic Spidey moments.

This series may have had its detractors, but it delivers a complete story acting as a concise set-up for "Avengers Vs. X-Men" and it has plenty of fun in the process. Sides aren't drawn here, but the causes worth fighting for are defined. From here, Loeb and McGuiness turn it over to other creators for "AvX." Their interpretation of Cable's journey is complete and they had a blast bringing that tale to light, something that particularly shines through in this closing chapter.
