"Enemy of the State II" has yet to really live up to its predecessor. Conceptually, it's a fitting sequel, but the scope isn't really there yet. This momentum especially begins to chug in this issue, as it's not entirely clear what the point of Laura and Gabby's sea excursion truly was. The whole plot point feels wasted, given the way it resolves itself here. On the other hand, the long-awaited return of Bellona yields some strong character drama. And no matter the situation, Gabby is always good for a few laughs. It seems likely that this arc will improve the more it focuses on Laura's past and her relationships with her two surviving sisters. However, that will also require some improvement on the visual side of things. Artist Djibril Morisette-Phan doesn't bring much energy or excitement to the page here. The figures are flat and plagued by weird quirks like bizarrely textured noses and a lack of consistent size for Gabby. John Romita Jr.'s work on the original "Enemy of the State" is a tough act to follow, but that doesn't mean this sequel couldn't be doing more in that regard. -Jesse

For a story that calls itself "Enemy of the State II," this arc has been surprisingly insular and small in scope. It's more an opportunity for writer Tom Taylor to delve into Laura's tragic past and her relationship with her twisted handler, Kimura. Not that that's a bad thing, though as of yet the series doesn't have a great deal to say about that dynamic we haven't seen before. Nor does this issue do much to tap into the surprise return of Bellona and her betrayal of her sisters. Gabby continues to be the star of the show as she makes a stand and sets out to rescue Laura. And while the final twist in this issue seems pretty sudden and random, it does hint as some great Gabby-related material to come. This issue is also one of the stronger efforts from artist Nik Virella, who brings a harsh, gritty vibe to the page that's very much in keeping with the grim, psychological angle Taylor is taking. This may not be the epic murder-fest the original "Enemy of the State" was, but maybe it doesn't need to be. -Jesse

All-New Wolverine #17 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

One of the central themes of the Wolverine saga has been about control — about the struggle between one's animal urges, compounded by the shadowy machinations of black ops experimentation. While Logan escaped his fate as a lab rat, his female clone, Laura, wasn't quite as fortunate — and it's this dive into her psyche that makes All-New Wolverine #17 stand out. Writer Tom Taylor digs into where Laura goes when the trigger scent is unleashed, and by playing that introspection off the tension of approaching S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (as well as Laura trying not to kill anyone under the influence), you get a nice mix of storytelling. That said, the artwork does feel like an acquired taste — Djibril Morisette-Phan's compositions don't seem to knock out Taylor's loftier dream sequences, making full-page spreads of Laura in all her incarnations fall flat. All in all, this is a book with ambitions, and even if it doesn't always work in execution, this is worth a look.

"Enemy of the State II" has often struggled to live up to its predecessor in terms of scale and general carnage. And visually, this arc is still fighting an uphill battle. Djibril Morissette-Phan's delivers some effective page design in this issue as it transitions between Laura's waking life and dreams, but the flat, lifeless figures often do a disservice to the script. However, emotionally, this issue connects about as well as any in Tom Taylor's run to date. Much like the issue in the original "Enemy of the State" that focused on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s efforts to de-program Wolverine, this issue hinges on the attempt to break Laura's weakness to her control scent. The difference being that Taylor frames the ordeal as an introspective, even intimate battle that hinges on the sisterly bond between Laura and Gabby. It's a firm reminder that, for all the mistakes this series can make at times, Tom Taylor really knows how to write Laura Kinney. The question is whether that strength can carry over into the final chapter next month. -Jesse
