Jeff Lemire & Andrea Sorrentino's The Bone Orchard: Mythos In 2022



They teased it and now it is here.  Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino are launching a new horror comic book series for 2022, called The Bone Orchard: Mythos.  A six-issue series that Lemire promises "will be the most ambitious thing he and I have done together" it will be published by Image Comics next year, part of the publisher's 30th anniversary promotions.

Lemire and Sorrentino have worked together on Old Man Logan at Marvel Comics, Green Arrow and Joker: Killer Smile at DC Comics, Gideon Falls at Image Comics for which they won an Eisner together, and the new Primordial, also from Image. Gideon Falls is also to be a TV show, courtesy of Hive Media. And today they will be announcing something... new. Previously Jeff Lemire has posted today's date, tagging in Andrea Sorrentino and Image Comics, stating "Tomorrow...something scary." And yes, it happens to be Hallowe'en today.

È la prima volta in assoluto che prendo un colpo con un volta pagina!
Dopo il breve capitolo del FCBD Prelude: Shadow Eater e questa storia posso dire che Lemire e Sorrentino con questo nuovo universo narrativo horror mi hanno totalmente preso e gettato dentro ad un vortice di ansia, suspense e orrore! Ambientazione tremendamente suggestiva (un'isola con un faro), un mistero tanto semplice quanto inquietante (un buco nel terreno profondissimo) e una conclusione che si lega al background del protagonista molto toccante. La seconda parte della storia che sprigiona un incipit suggestivo per questo universo horror è senza ombra di dubbio stuzzicante e inquietante. Si capisce benissimo che ci sarà tanto da leggere e tanti mostri/entità da esplorare (si vedono le loro statue e i loro monumenti, anche la maschera già vista nel FCBD).

Eh tanta ma tanta roba per il sottoscritto!

Ok, primi due collegamenti al FCBD The Bone Orchard Mythos Prelude: Shadow Eater e a The Passageway ovvero la maschera (preludio e nelle statue in The Passageway) disegnata nel diario di storie di Trish da bambina e le piume nere viste anche nella storia del faro (The Passageway) + un richiamo divertente sempre al faro con il logo delle birre a casa di Terri
Neanche a dirlo sempre inquietante e sempre misterioso. È presto per capire tutto ovvio ma già si sa che Trish ha compiuto un terribile atto nei confronti della sua amica Jackie.
Vignetta finale che con quel braccio bianco quasi sulla testa di Trish mi ha tolto un bel "oh piano eh già c'ho l'ansia...!"

Ci si immerge nel mondo fantasy inventato dalle due ragazzine tornando di tanto in tanto nel mondo reale. Interessante questa scelta. Anche qui si rivedono le maschere di Shadow Eater questa volta indossate dai tirapiedi del dark lord inventato dalle due amiche. Ma mi chiedo quanto sia irreale questo mondo vista la storia.. si vedrà più avanti!
Il distacco di Jacqueline da Trish a causa della crescita verso l'età adulta forse è un preludio al fattaccio? Non ne sono così convinto..

Era palese un interesse di "quel" tipo da parte di Trish per Jackie ed è stato un momento molto teen drama, ma ancora non si capisce se sia stata veramente Trish a compiere il fatidico gesto e se il rifiuto di Jackie sia stato la chiave di tutto. Il finale horror rimescola un pò le carte anche se la vittima si era resa totalmente estranea riguardo alla scomparsa di Jacqueline. C'è anche qui un richiamo alla mappa inventata dalle due ragazzine per la loro storia fantasy, cioè il disegno gigantesco sul muro all'esterno del capannone dove c'è il corpo di Casey.

Per Trish ormai è solo questione di superare il dolore per la scomparsa dell'amica. Deve andare oltre, lasciare quel luogo e tornare a NY. Ma non c'entra solo il dolore, è proprio il fatto che ora l'orrore si sta riversando nelle strade o più precisamente la sta seguendo. Molto inquietanti le scene alla centrale di polizia..!
Nel finale ottiene quello che vuole, ma il luogo raggiunto non sembra essere amichevole!

No beh... Lemire e Sorrentino riescono sempre ad andare oltre, cazzo!
È ancora difficile capire o immaginare il quadro generale, il collegamento tra le serie a parte le varie entità mostrate su The Passageway è ancora flebile, ma ragazzi che "worldbuilding" che stanno tirando fuori! Qui la desolazione dell'altro "mondo" di Trish e Jackie è impressionante, mi ha fatto davvero effetto. Appunto desolato, senza speranza, "svuotato" oserei dire, con questo regnante monolitico gigantesco che sovrasta tutto. Sono davvero colpito ed è proprio il genere che piace a me! Non so perché ma mi ha ricordato sia Stephen King che Clive Barker.
La storia non finisce bene, devo dirlo. Come le altre, ti toglie la speranza.

Ho letto il volume Bao "Il passaggio". Sono poche pagine e alcune sono mute e altre pure splash-page. È un fumetto che vive di suggestioni, mistero e degli ottimi disegni di Sorrentino, molto evocativi. Sinceramente non so dove Lemire vorrà andare a parare... il mondo "nascosto" sembra una figata. Nel mondo reale (?) non mancano gli elementi interessanti, a partire dall'ambientazione, l'isola e il faro, e dal passato del protagonista, con i suoi incubi. Poi ci sono gli uccelli che, come Hitchcock insegna, creano sempre inquietudine.
Boh, atmosfera promossa, storia forse ancora non giudicabile.

Finita anche questa serie del magico duo e che dire...Non lascia scampo!
Una storia cupa e cattiva che sprofonda sempre più nella malvagità (o verso la salvezza?), ma non per questo priva di qualche spiraglio di luce. I protagonisti a turno dimostrano di poter anche far del bene, come per rimediare alle loro inadempienze ma non è così per tutti e questo non è sinonimo di salvezza...

Sorrentino è impeccabile specialmente nel #10, fuori di testa! Ha superato se stesso!

Ora si attende la pubblicazione dei prossimi progetti!
