Somewhat bogged down by its sporadic shipping schedule of late, this stand-alone chapter acts as the perfect remedy. Told as a series of small tall tales, Dan Slott's latest script exemplifies everything that's made this series so endearing from the start. From its inclusive air to its expertly layered themes, there's the real sense that Slott can find the sentiment and wonder in any situation. That same feeling extends to the book's art, where Mike and Laura Allred again deliver with their wondrous design and captivating colors. This isn't an issue that will drive the story forward, nor is it one that challenges the characters in any specific way. What it does do is provide yet another strong, diverse and effortlessly entertaining adventure in a series seemingly made of them. The long delay between issues aside, don't let this one leave your pull list. -Jeff

Silver Surfer is the rare series you can just pick up and go. That's not to discredit the nuance of Dan Slott's long form development — the evolution of Norrin and Dawn's relationship remains the book's highest point — but rather to give credit to the accessibility of his stories. Issue #9 is an excellent example of that ease. It doesn't matter if you're a long-time fan or a new reader just hopping on. There's a relatable quality to Dawn that extends beyond the carefully crafted history Slott has devised for her. This new adventure manages to be fun, socially relevant, and a little bit introspective, culminating in a nice bit of development that's been a long time coming. Add in yet another stellar display of wild designs and sweeping eye-candy colors from Mike and Laura Allred and you get a chapter that checks darn near every box you can imagine. -Jeff

From Mike and Laura Allred's stunning visual opener to Dan Slott's emotional close, Silver Surfer #10 is darn near perfect in its execution. The story itself won't end up on any list of the character's best — though the introduction of a canary-yellow Galactus certainly merits its consideration — but in terms of sheer emotional investment this chapter can't be beat. Over the course of their adventures we've seen the relationship between Norin and Dawn bud and grow, and here Slott finally delivers on the character work he's so patiently cultivated. The culminating moment only works as well as it does because of the time we've invested in these two, and Allred's otherworldly depiction of the event is positively grin-inducing. Silver Surfer continues to be unlike anything else currently on shelves, and it's that assured uniqueness that makes this particular aside so satisfying. -Jeff Final Score:

Dan Slott and Mike Allred's Silver Surfer saga is almost at an end, and you'd better believe the series is really starting to tug at the heartstrings. It's difficult to discuss the plot of this issue without giving too much away. Suffice it to say that Slott and Allred offer a terrific examination of the Norrin/Dawn relationship in the light of Dawn's father's death. The same whimsical sense of adventure and discovery that has always propelled this book remains in full force, but there's also a a strong sense of wistful sadness as the creators gear up for their big finale. Allred's artistic versatility has rarely been this apparent or crucial. He renders plenty of epic, crazy imagery as the duo journey to the farthest reaches of space and time. Yet there's also a rich sense of emotion to these pages as the focus steadily shifts inward and moves from cosmic spectacle to intimate human drama. With a penultimate issue this strong, the finale has a very high bar to meet. -Jesse

I'm not ugly-crying at Silver Surfer, you are! Writer Dan Slott pulls on the heartstrings hard this week, and artist Mike Allred is along for the ride, as this series goes deeper than it ever has before for the star-crossed romance that is Norrin Radd and Dawn Greenwood. What starts as a sequel to Slott's innovative time travel story becomes something much more poignant and bittersweet, as we get to watch the Surfer and Dawn live their lives out in a universe beyond universes, where even the Power Cosmic gets rendered by the Allreds in almost computerized blocks rather than the standard Kirby crackle. But in so doing, Slott will prove to many readers that they didn't know what they had until they lost it — watching Norrin and Dawn make their final goodbyes as an old couple might put a lump in your throat, but for my money, it's what happens to Toomie, the Surfer's sentient board, that'll do you in. Combine that with a veritable firework celebration from Allred, including a double-page splash of half the Marvel Universe, and you've got yourself a real winner.
