Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu's take on Black Canary has modernized the character, but this issue's plot is so retro you could practically describe it as groovy. The Quietus is a creature who is essentially the absence of sound, and when all sound ceases: so does the world. The world's only hope is Black Canary (the band, not just the superhero), who have to play the show of their lives in order to defeat the creature. It's a charmingly fun plot, but the story isn't what's important here - it's the art. Annie Wu does an incredible job of visualizing this abstract battle with a combination of clever panel layouts and beautiful color cues to indicate sound and no sound. Wu should be commended for a great execution in this issue, but if a few pages had managed to convey sound even better, it may have been something more than "just" a great comic. –Levi
