Brenden Fletcher's new-look Black Canary has been equal parts style and substance so far, but in issue #3 the split tilts heavily towards the former. That's not entirely a criticism, as giving Annie Wu more artistic freedom to romp is never a bad thing, but it does result in a quick issue that doesn't possess quite the same pull as the first two. That's not to say it's without its intrigue. The introduction of D's mind-blanked ex-husband adds a welcome wrinkle to the narrative, particularly in his connection to Ditto and her hinted history. The ending feels a bit forced by comparison, but at the very least it sends the book in a more pointed direction. Really, this is Wu's show, and she steals it with ample parts energy and style. Her panels are engaging in a very cinematic way, utilizing numerous angles and dramatic close ups to amplify the escalating action. With Wu on board, every issue is a fun time. -Jeff

Brenden Fletcher and Annie Wu's reinvention of Black Canary comes literally screaming out of the first page, and is relentless in its pace and excitement this month. Taking a trip along the fury road, the often wordless action sequences are sublimely balanced with some vital character clues about Dinah are her recently late (but not quite so late any more) husband. Fletcher lets Wu take center stage in some totally punk aesthetics, with Lee Loughridge's colors playing with purple, orange, and a decent helping of Ben-Day dots that feels as though Dinah is ripping apart the panel with her cries. More than this, we finally get some more information about the true nature of Ditto, and how Canary's powers are tied to the diminutive guitarist. One of DC's finest out right now.

Even with a guest artist Black Canary doesn't miss a beat. Of course, when your guest artist is Pia Guerra it's pretty easy to keep things humming, her clean lines bringing an easy energy and human humor to the proceedings. This proves helpful, as the issue itself is little more than an extended origin story, Brendan Fletcher focusing the bulk of his pages on the jilted past and eventual transformation of former band lead, Bo Maeve. While said focus is a little drawn out, it does allow for a more unique and carefully layered character, something that will likely pay dividends given that scream of a final page. There's also some further sideways exploration of the ever silent Ditto, and while her roundabout abduction is ultimately reversed, there's enough murky intrigue (and ninjas!) to merit the side trip. Really though, this is Guerra's issue, her pages loaded with the same realized characters and eye-catching style we've come to expect. -Jeff

Black Canary #5 is a disappointment on the writing side, even as the art is anything but. We'll get the bad out of the way first – this whole issue is pretty much unnecessary when taken with the events of last issue. We get so little plot or character progression here that it just seems like this issue's cliffhanger could've easily been slapped on the end of #4 without missing much. But that art is worth the cover price alone. It's a disappointment that Pia Guerra hasn't done more since Y the Last Man ended - her style is just so relatable, her characters so human. Seeing these characters we love drawn by such a strong artistic force is worth some of the meandering story elements. -Levi
