This is the first chapter of any of Marvel's new Star Wars books that left me cold, which I suppose speaks highly for the quality of the line as a whole. But after two solid issues detailing young Caleb Dume's downfall, the series loses a great deal of momentum in issue #3. Part of this is due to the nonchalant way Greg Weisman resolves the seemingly life-threatening cliffhanger from last month. Part of it stems from the way the script makes two abrupt jumps forward in time, rushing through what would seem like key periods in Caleb's evolution from naive Padawan to roughneck survivor. And still another reason is the sense that Caleb's story is just spinning in circles and recycling beats at the moment. Pepe Larraz's art remains a draw, at least. Larraz brings an organic and dynamic quality to every page, one that appropriately draws from both the Prequel and Original Trilogy eras rather than simply regurgitating the look of the Rebels cartoon. Hopefully the story can find its footing again in issue #4. -Jesse

This comic was originally announced as a mini-series rather than an ongoing, and that fact is apparent when reading this issue. There's a certain finality to this issue as Greg Weisman completes the first major leg of Caleb Dume's journey and his evolution into Kanan Jarrus. While the arc as a whole experienced a rocky journey, Weisman is able to wrap it up in a more satisfying and cohesive fashion. The interaction between Caleb and his former Clonetrooper allies stands out as especially poignant. Pepe Larraz's art remains a highlight of the book, blending the traditional Star Wars aesthetic and the stylized approach of rebels into one cohesive whole. His talent for rendering space battles is on full display in this issue. Unfortunately, the story does stumble a bit as it transitions back to the Rebels era and the adult Kanan. The final page is awkwardly framed and a little too hokey for its own good. -Jesse
