Daredevil has been the center of a number of critically acclaimed tales that serve as inspiration for creators throughout the history of modern comics. Many of those creators, in turn, have found themselves blessed with the opportunity to contribute to the adventures of the Man Without Fear and have become legends in their own right. "Daredevil: End of Days" brings a handful of those creative giants together to deliver the story of Daredevil's -- and Matt Murdock's -- final days.

Any final Daredevil story has to spread the love around to those characters synonymous with the words "Daredevil" and "comics": Bullseye and Kingpin, Foggy Nelson and Ben Urich. Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack write the final fights between Daredevil and two of the most iconic villains in his rogue's gallery. One of those battles begins the narrative in "End of Days" when former Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich, inspired by his friend Matt Murdock, sets out to tell the ultimate tribute to Daredevil.

Bendis and Mack give the story over to seasoned veteran artists Klaus Janson and Bill Sienkiewicz, who both share some history with Daredevil. Janson brings grit and grime and street-level gutter-filth-covered beauty to this book while Sienkiewicz spins it all through the psychedelic dryer. Add in some masterfully placed bonus painted panels from Sienkiewicz and this comic almost transcends the scope of its characters and creators to become an art book. Almost. Janson and Sienkiewicz break convention more than once, including one spread with thirty-two gritty, detailed panels wonderfully colored to near tangibility by "Punisher" colorist Matt Hollingsworth. The unexpected becomes the norm for this issue as the artists elect to frequently tell the story across the spread and more than a few times provide Bendis and Mack with strong enough storytelling that even sound effects aren't required to keep the narrative moving forward.

The review copy provided to CBR included one very unfortunate typo: "sensei" is replaced by "senses," slightly changing the context of the narrative from Ben Urich. That narrative pitches the story into past tense as Joe Caramagna employs the juxtaposition of polished cold, electric blue caption boxes that Urich uses to narrate his Daredevil piece against the dingy typeface used for Urich's inner thoughts. Every aspect of this issue has come together to build into an unforgettable Daredevil story.

Once upon a time, this book would have been one of the wonderfully oversized softcover graphic novels Marvel pumped out in the 1980s. What it is, however, is the comic book equivalent to a greatest hits album or a gonzo final farewell stadium tour from a legendary band. This band has Janson on bass, Mack on drums, Sienkiewicz playing a mean, feedback-laced fuzzy guitar and Bendis wailing out vocals like he's never going to do it again. If none of these creators ever touches ol' Hornhead again, they can all rest well knowing they gave Daredevil fans an adventure on the path to immortality to become an influential Daredevil classic.

Whatever happened to the Man Without Fear?
A true "end times" story about the blind vigilante Matt Murdock, Daredevil: End of Days is the product of no less than four comic book heavyweights operating at the height of their powers. Beautiful in its ugliness, wonderful in its bleakness, the eight-issue End of Days could very well be the definitive conclusion of Matt Murdock's tragic, heroic career.

Of course, this isn't just Daredevil's story. Like the knights of old, Matt Murdock's life and times are being retold through a faithful bard — or in this case, burned-out Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich. Reporting on the last days of the Man Without Fear, Urich may be a smart cookie, but he's still an unreliable narrator... and thus a perfect choice for keeping the reader off-balance. Bendis and Mack start this comic off with a gory bang, and the despair only gets worse from here. As Bendis sneakily recaps his acclaimed run on the series, we learn that things have since changed for Matt Murdock over the years, with shocking decisions that are altogether brutal, tragic, and perhaps even disconcertingly logical. The "whys" can come later — the "what" is disturbing enough already.

Bendis and Mack's writing would have probably been enough to make this comic special, but the artwork is what kicks this comic into the stratosphere. Klaus Janson and Bill Sienkiewicz take the standard which all Daredevil stories are measured against — that's right, the legendary Frank Miller — and drags those craggy lines through the grime of Hell's Kitchen. You can almost feel your teeth ring with every punch as we witness a street fight between Daredevil and Bullseye; you almost feel transported to a distended Hell on Earth when we see the bloated Kingpin survey his kingdom from a penthouse suite. Janson's layouts in particular really evoke that classic Miller style, making Urich's transition from placid newsroom to the cynical, almost kaleidoscopic streets read completely seamlessly.

This may be the end of Daredevil, but Bendis, Mack, Janson and Sienkiewicz have delivered a new mystery that will leave you desperate for more. It's dirty, it's decedent, it's scary, it's sad. It's also well worth the wait. With perfect artwork and perfectly paced writing, End of Days #1 is a bleak, black epitaph that certainly gives this devil his due.

Is this really the end of Daredevil? Bendis and Mack bring us a story with an outcome you might not expect.
The Good
We've seen end stories many times. They can be entertaining but rarely have a memorable feel when you finish. With Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack on board, who have worked on the character together for several issues, it's clear that this won't be just another imaginary/future story. From the first page, things get ugly. This won't be a walk in the park for Daredevil. Bendis and Mack deliver a brutal look at what the near future holds for the character. It's not pretty.

Looking at the cover and considering the title, you might have an idea where this is going to go. What's surprising is the quick direction the story takes. Having Ben Urich present to give his take on the events is fitting and necessary. Not having him here for this would be a crime.

The story isn't as cut and dry as you might think. As you read through, you see the layers beginning to unfold. What starts out as the downfall of a hero turns into a bigger mystery.

Klaus Janson's pencils along with Bill Sienkiewicz's finished art and paintings and Matt Hollingsworth's colors give this story a truly brutal feel. This is exactly the look this story deserves to have.

The Bad
The issues starts out with a heck of a kick. It slows down a bit as we get a retelling of Daredevil's story courtesy of Ben Urich. This is fine for readers who aren't completely familiar with the character or recent events but then they most likely wouldn't be reading this future tale. The art looks great during the flashback pages but just slows down the story with information we already know.

This story will leave you with a sinking feeling. That's the intention and a good sign that the writing accomplishes what it seeks out to do but be prepared.

The Verdict
These future stories telling the final days of a hero can be tough. No one wants to see their favorite heroes get demolished but if it's told with great writing, you can't help but get pulled into it. Bendis and Mack give a dark and brutal look at what's to come of Daredevil. It will leave a sinking feeling as you turn each page with Janson and Sienkiewicz's gritty art. These types of stories are often hit or miss but this one is a hit, as in a hit on the back of your head with a brick. It will leave you reeling as you cringe at what Daredevil's future may hold for him. Just when you think you have the series figured out, a wrench comes flying your way to catch you by surprise. This is a heavy comic and it's exactly what you'd want from the series.
