We're smack dab in the middle of Dr. Strange trying to prevent a war between Wakandans (Wakandians?) and John Aman, with the Defenders caught in the middle. We're shows some of Aman's origin and how he came into his power so I felt an instant connection to that, even though I've been out of the loop for a while. Matt Fraction definitely piles on the action here, and there is a lot going on. Some other story bits, like Shuri's thirst for vengeance are also explained. The art team of Jamie McKelvie, Mike Norton, and Dommo Aymara is just aces. Even with a busy page, this team knocks it out. While I wasn't too thrilled with the premiere issue of Defenders, things have certainly picked up.

"The Defenders" #8 by Matt Fraction and Jamie McKelvie is a nice entry into the Defenders story arc, with its offbeat style of jumping into the past and introducing readers to a whole crew of characters before going right back into the action. It's not a perfect book, but it's doing some very interesting things.

One of the strengths of this issue is how effortlessly Fraction handles both a complicated plot and a slew of characters. He does it so well that I didn't realize until after I put the book down how many different characters I'd been reading about. Also, I would totally read a book about his nine "explorers" set in the past. Can we have that as a monthly book? All of those characters seemed fascinating in the few pages we were given to explore them.

Jamie McKelvie's art on this book is gorgeous and Mike Norton blends his style with McKelvie's to the best of his ability, but it's still a bit distracting when a face you'd come to expect to look like X, suddenly looks like Y. On the whole, it's a beautiful book -- action packed and full of great character acting, particularly with Black Cat, who must be just as much fun to draw as she seems to be to write.

McKelvie has really grown as an artist over the past few years. He's always had a lovely and very clean style, but there's such density and attention to detail in his work these days. Everything feels appropriately detailed whether it's a character's hairstyle or a massive ossuary. The colors by Dommo Aymara have that perfect superhero pop and are a great fit for McKelvie's crisp uncluttered style.

"Defenders" has not been the most consistent book for these first eight issues, with a variety of different artists piloting in and a sometimes strange take on plotting, but Fraction is a good writer and he's clearly having a fun, which comes across in the pages. The book has also benefited from some really great artists –- if you're going to have rotating artists, these are good ones to have! Still, I hope in upcoming issues Fraction can anchor things a bit more so we have a little more consistency to go with our rollicking good times.

"The Defenders" #9 definitively shows Matt Fraction ability to deliver on the premise and promise of this series. Our random assortment of heroes are thrown through space and time into a parallel universe that echoes past issues of great comics, but aren't exactly the same. There is a psychedelic pomp on display in grand style that Fraction and Jamie McKelvie both play up perfectly.

This issue is incredibly reference heavy to the point that annotations are almost necessary. There are nods to some very obscure things on nearly every page. However, through the entire issue, the narrative is clear. This isn't an excuse to play cute and forget the overall mission. Fraction and McKelvie still tie everything through a major spy fight and into the next step. They don't lose any substance by adding more gloss and bring something extra each time they allude to back issues.

This comic's strength is often in the disparate characters and the way they carry themselves through situations. Every line and action feels authentic to the character available in the scene, which would be drastically different with another character on the page. This team isn't full of easily interchangeable cookie-cutter generics. Fraction ensures each hero is his or her own unique, fleshed out persona. Danny Rand has an individual perspective and thought process in these scenarios radically different from Doctor Strange or Black Cat.

Jamie McKelvie's art is gorgeous and so well suited to this script. The psychedelic nature of this time/reality hop brings out the best in McKelvie's expressive lines. He knows how to present a character to make readers feel real emotion and stages some fantastic action moments -- the small scene of Nick Fury dropping a whiskey glass while clutching his neck is shown with a canted angle on the frame. It's a cinematic approach parceling up that single frame. There are also two major action splashes that show McKelvie's skill at using every part of the page, left to right, front to back. McKelvie fits an academic level of information in the background and nuances of his work.

"The Defenders" #9 is the best issue of the series so far and a benchmark for the potential of the book. Fraction and McKelvie deliver a whole new world, the speedy descent of its Nick Fury and all the action and strangeness this title needs. The narrative moves in fast, does some damage and moves on. The end leaves the audience entertained with a whole scattering of obvious and subliminal suggestions for other very cool things to check out. Here's hoping the title can keep this high bar aloft as the story of the Concordance Engine continues.

stranamente sono d'accordo con cbr  :asd:

Davvero ottimo numero e ottima serie. Si vede che Fraction si diverte come un matto a scriverla

Marvel Cancels Defenders With Issue 12

It's either in you or it's not.

And it's not.

Comic books are launched with pizzazz, razzle dazzle, hootenanny and spectacle. But often cancelled in ignimony, shame and hopefully where few will notice. A good trick is to "bury the lead", announce it next to a much bigger story.

Such as Matt Fraction writing Fantastic Four and FF being reported by USA Today. And then saying halfway down the page;

She-Hulk has a pedigree with the team since she has been a member of the Fantastic Four, plus she'd be Ben's pick because she's "the one person he knew he could never lick," says Fraction, who writes Red She-Hulk in Defenders, which ends its run at issue 12 in November.

Defenders was launched with much fanfare, relaunching the faded Marvel trademark team of characters and bringing new changes to the team. Sales however did not reflect the hype with sales clinging around the 100 mark – one of the Marvel Universe's lowest sellers.

Look for the last issue being listed in the upcoming November solicits.
