THE Comic Vine Review by Sara 'Babs' Lima

Erik comes face to face with a very familiar face, and the result is not pretty.
The Good

So far, writer Skottie Young is doing an absolutely phenomenal job organizing this four issue mini-series, making it clear cut, concise and really easy to jump into for any new reader. If you were able to check out the first issue of this series then you may recall the end where a character who was previously believed to have been dead, made his return to comics. The second issue opens chronicling how the character makes his return -- and it's great. I really appreciate that Young didn't glaze over the how and why, and made it clear to the readers so early on in this four-issue story.

Between Clay Mann's pencils, Seth Mann's inks and David Curiel's colors; you get a gorgeous book with vibrant colors that will suck you in panel after panel. The bleakness of the first few pages where Astra summons Magneto's rival from the dead is absolutely brilliant. This book is just gorgeous. The artists took their time illustrating the background, which I personally really appreciate. The details of the background in every panel really helps draw the reader into the story and make them feel like they are there.

The thing I really enjoy about this book is the parallel between the Magneto that was and how he has evolved as a character. While his beliefs have remained the same, his methods to accomplishing them have changed. It's an interesting contrast and it's nice to see the two characterizations side by side. I hope that within the next two issues Skottie Young delves a little bit deeper into Erik's convictions and beliefs regarding where mutants stand.
The Bad

This is an absolutely fantastic issue. No complaints here!
The Verdict

If you don't know much about Magneto, or you never really liked the character, this might be a great four-issue mini to delve into. MAGNETO: NOT A HERO is not only beautifully illustrated, but it explores the changes that have been made to Erik's character over the years, giving new and old readers alike an opportunity to explore the character and see what makes him tick. This is gearing up to be a really awesome series, and I will be interested in seeing whether or not Erik undergoes any changes that may revert him back to his old ways. We will have to wait and see. I definitely recommend this book.

Magneto might be a "good guy," but deep down he's still the same Eric Lehnsherr.
The Good
I thoroughly enjoyed Clay Mann's pencils in this issue; I felt that overall the art was really beautiful and complimented the story very well. I'll get into my feelings regarding the pacing in the issue a bit later, as I did feel it was a bit slow and that there were some rather unnecessary scenes in this issue.

Skottie Young has a wonderful grasp of Magneto's character, and while he might be "old and gray" he continues to be a formidable opponent and a force to be reckoned with. I love the way he's portrayed in this issue. Young makes it known to the reader that although a lot has changed about Magneto, the essence of who he is and the efforts he is willing to take to achieve certain goals continue to be the same. Basically, torture is still an option. His character has definitely evolved, but not that much.

There is a great scene between Magneto and Cyclops in this issue. I thoroughly enjoyed their back and forth banter as well as Scott's light-hearted jabs at Magneto's old age. The art in this scene speaks to the reader in this scene. Mann does a great job conveying the story through his depiction of emotion. The collaboration between Mann and Young is really solid.

The Bad
There's one particular scene that felt slightly out of place, in my opinion. Drawing a comparison between the present "Occupy movement" to Christopher Bach's protest wasn't comparable and felt slightly out of place, in my opinion. Ignoring for a moment that one protest is fictional; the two are completely unrelated and it didn't make sense bringing up "occupy," even if it was establishing the story in the present. It felt unnecessary.

The pacing of this issue was a little bit slower and the fight with Astra was a bit too brief. I would have liked to see it drawn out a bit more, but I understand that sometimes that's out of the hands of the creator who only has four issues to tell his story.

The Verdict
Definitely not a good jumping on point for new readers as this is the penultimate issue. I think what I enjoyed most about this comic is that although it's the third of a four issue mini-series, I'm still not sure what will happen next. When the reader isn't able to predict what will happen in the final issue of a mini-series, you know you have done a pretty great job crafting a solid story. There are some really great moments in this issue, my favorite of which I mentioned above. Although this is the weakest of the issues so far, it still left me wondering what will happen next. Definitely a great read. Highly recommend to any Magneto fan.

We are called Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak. Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced. Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed. Weaknesses like... emotions, pain. You will become like us. You will be upgraded.

Magneto finally faces off against his clone in a very public battle.
The Good
The final battle between Magneto and his clone, Joseph, happens in this final issue of Skottie Young's mini-series. If I had to sum up this book in one word after looking back at the previous four issues it would absolutely have to be 'consistent.' The pacing throughout this series is consistent and perfect: at no point did it feel forced or rush, which is fantastic.

Aside from the gorgeous art by Clay Mann, Seth Mann, and David Curiel; this book had awesome characterizations. There have been plenty of times where a publisher released a mini series that really doesn't fit into continuity and that leaves the readership wondering "why did I invest in this?" By the end of MAGNETO: NOT A HERO, however, the reader will get an idea of exactly why this story is important to Magneto's character. Scottie Young solidifies Magneto's character: he is different than he used to be. He is no longer Erik vying for power, although his ambitions and hopes remain the same; he has since resolved to go about getting what he wants through different means. There are some truly fantastic moments where the character essentially sees a mirror image of the man he used to be in Joseph: a man who has no problem with destruction if it ultimately means getting what he wants. It's a great series of panels that divide the action and the character development very eloquently.

The Bad
When you have two guys with exactly the same power set, you're going to assume that they won't just move the same, but they will think very similarly as well. Which is why I thought it so strange that the battle between Joseph and Magneto lasted for such a short period of time. When these two were inevitably going to face off, I figured that readers would witness a prolonged, drawn out, epic battle which we certainly did not get. Obviously the four part mini had to end with this final, fourth issue; but it did feel a little bit premature.

The Verdict
This book has had some really gorgeous art and the writing has been on point. While I am sad to see the book go, I am glad that the we got a really well written and very pretty store that focused on Magneto as a character, giving readers a great chance to see how far Mags has come. Truly great stuff in this series. I recommend picking it up from the beginning rather than starting with the fourth and final issue, for obvious reasons.

:rulezza:
Perfettamente d'accordo, la determinazione di Magnus in questa storia è senza pari, la scena che lo contrappone a Stark è da manuale.
Fra l'altro mi è piaciuto anche il fatto che,

Era un confronto che si aspettava da decenni!
