Green Lantern Corps #39 (Published by DC Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

With Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo on art duties, there's no question that Green Lantern Corps is a pretty book, and even if the actual storyline they're drawing is a little hazy this issue, they make it look action-packed. What holds this book back is that Van Jensen's villains feel a little underdeveloped - there's mind-control involved, but there are also demonic-looking alien beasts threatening, and that makes the threat John Stewart is facing a little harder to embrace. (That said, Jensen does put together some fun action beats, like Stewart creating a florescent jackhammer to get his crew out of a scrap.) The side story is actually more engaging here, as shapeshifting GL Von Daggle finds his long-lost partner and discovers an even graver threat. Ultimately, what sells this book is that Chang and Maiolo make this book look energetic and expressive, and that's a good sign in a week that's otherwise weak of a lot of compelling comic book offerings.

Landry Walker had very big shoes to fill when he took over from Charles Soule on issue #38. Last issue, he presented readers a Guy Gardner enraged by himself and the mess he'd left on Earth. Issue #39 continues that trend with a Guy who is admittedly no longer himself, but is still trying to do right by the world. This issue has an absurd premise as previewed by the cover, but the story itself is one that is entirely relevant to the direction Soule originally set forth for the character. In that, Walker is honoring the story that fans gravitated towards and continues to do a serviceable job with the material. That said, he's hindered by the situation at hand as Guy no longer has a supporting cast. The issue, like #38 is a little one-noted as a result so this absurd storyline actually helps to lighten things up a bit. Though there is still a lot of Guy bemoaning his own fate, Walker is definitely moving things forward to some kind of goal for Guy whatever it may be. Calafiore continues to bring a cohesive feel to this series since his original collaborator has departed. His layouts continue to be clear and exciting to see, and nobody draws Guy's wicked new beard quite like Calafiore. -Mike

Red Lanterns #39 (Published by DC Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 5 out of 10):

Easily the most bonkers single issue to come out of DC Comics in months, Red Lanterns #39 is a comic book entirely centered around Guy Gardner getting into a fight with a baby. That's it. Landry Walker's high concept is what makes or breaks this book - you either will think it's hilarious that Guy gets his ring handed to him by a bloodthirsty toddler, or you're going to want to put this book right back on the shelf. Jim Calafiore's artwork admittedly doesn't feel like a natural fit for this goofy of a concept - he's all hard edges, not comedy - but admittedly he does excellent work for the rage entity powering this diaper-wearing destroyer. Unfortunately, you've got to be pretty forgiving in terms of suspension of disbelief, both to follow this premise as well as to swallow the tenuous solution to the problem. I give this book points for craziness, but your mileage will almost certainly vary.

The final arc of Green Lantern Corps is, appropriately enough, all about John Stewart. Van Jensen has crafted a story that allows us the explore his failings on Xanshi while finally closing off that chapter for the character. John has been carrying his guild around for a long time, so it's satisfying to finally see him getting the peace of mind he deserves. Whereas this is the strength of this arc, The Shadow Empire is a bit of a mixed bag. Apparently, it is one of the biggest threats the Green Lanterns have ever faced, but readers never really get the chance to see why. There's a lot of telling instead of showing going on here and what's worse is that they could have been a great villain for John to go up against considering how much work Jensen went through to tie them into John's past. Bernard Chang and Mirko Colak work together once again and just like last issue the results are mixed. Chang's panels are laid out in such a way to evoke all of the action happening on the page with thoroughly satisfying results, but Colak's pencils are once again rushed and in need of a bit more attention to detail. -Mike

Green Lantern Corps #40 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Jeff Marsick; 'Rama Rating 2 out of 10):

Don't let the title, "With a Bang," fool you: This series finale is actually much more of a whimper. John Stewart's revisiting of his greatest failure, Xanshi, never materializes into anything more than marketing hype; and as an emasculating blow to the series' marquee, it's actually as Star Sapphire that John vanquishes the overwhelmingly unintimidating Shadow Empire. Bernard Chang does a decent job of incorporating artistic energy to such a lackluster script, even with alien race designs that are uninspired and cartoony. His pencils and action scenes tend to be undone, however, by Marcelo Maiolo's poorly timed monochromatic panels that give a haphazardly unfinished look to several of the scenes. The issue is pre-Convergence filler and testament to why this series needs a serious revamping.
