Black Hand is here and get ready to see what's in store for Hal and Sinestro.
The Good
There's always so much going on in this title. With Black Hand back in his right mind and in possession of the Book of the Black, you know things can't be good for Hal and Sinestro. You never quite know what you're going to get when it comes to the prophecies in the book but we do get a couple that will leave you scratching your head. Geoff Johns is getting good at giving us these little teases and what's nice is, he always stays true to them. They aren't just done for the sake of shocking readers (even if these have the potential to).

Throughout the encounter with Hal, Sinestro and Black Hand, we also visit the other characters to get updates on Carol Ferris and the Guardians with their plan to get rid of the Green Lantern Corps. You'll enjoy the fighting/team up with Hal and Sinestro and wonder how long this relationship will last. GREEN LANTERN has mostly always been about having Hal as the main star but with each issue, I'm loving the idea of Hal and Sinestro working side by side. Normally I'm not a fan of the 'villain-turned-good-guy' story since it never lasts, and maybe it won't here, but it's playing out in a glorious fashion.

The moment I've been dreading the last few issues has come again. Doug Mahnke is not doing the art for this issue. But we do get Renato Guedes, who does a great job filling in. Guedes' art captures the Black Hand scenes nicely. We also have Jim Calafiore also doing some pages.

The Bad
I am always bothered when we have multiple artists on the same issue. For the most part, the scenes are separate and the styles aren't too drastically different. But you can clearly see a difference in Hal and Sinestro in the beginning and final pages.

I mentioned there is a lot going on but with the zero issue next month, this almost felt like it had moments of delaying the story a little in order to accomodate the schedule. We've been hearing about the Guardians and their plan for several months now. What the heck is taking them so long to get things in motion? You would think they'd have the power and ability to get their plan started. If they are determined to replace the Corps, they should be able to do so quicker. Thankfully this story is set to "end" in GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 in two weeks.

The Verdict
Dark times are coming. It's always great to get reminders that previous events, such as 'Blackest Night,' still hold in the New 52. Hal and Sinestro continue their unlikely alliance in order to deal with Black Hand. There's more prophecies being revealed and the Guardians are still planning to restructure the universe. While there is a lot going on here, there is a slight feeling that the story is being stalled a bit in order to accomodate the zero issue next month. Although this story appears to conclude in the first GL annual in two weeks. Doug Mahnke takes a break in this issue and we have Renato Guedes and Jim Calafiore on hand. The styles are fitting for the story but slight differences make the presentation slightly distracting. You'll be glued to your seat as you see what develops here and if the last page doesn't make you long for the annual in two weeks, then I'm not sure what else would.

Azrael shame on you!!!!

We are called Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak. Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced. Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed. Weaknesses like... emotions, pain. You will become like us. You will be upgraded.

Come al solito un numero di altissima qualità, Guardiani sempre più orridi, francamente mai avrei immaginato

Tell us something we don't know, Geoff.

In my world, Green Lantern is a safe pick every month due to the fact that some of the best crossover stories have started in a Green Lantern book and then been spread across the DCU (the Sinestro Corps. War, for example). But as Geoff Johns builds towards the new epic entitled "The Third Army," Issue #12 of Green Lantern doesn't add anything new to the mix, and instead rehashes old plot line in a failed attempt to create tension.

From the moment I opened this book, I guessed its ending. Geoff Johns practically throws it in the faces of the readers, and at no point does the story deviate from the predictable conclusion. Whereas previous issues played with the dynamic of Hal and Thaal Sinestro, this issue focuses on elucidating all the major plot points for the future of the series. It's like Johns doesn't trust his readers to connect the dots themselves, and when the mot juste occurs, it lacks all the intensity of the previous cliffhangers. Instead, readers will think "Yeah, so?"

Everything we see Hal and Sinestro do in this issue is something they've done before, and now that Hal is untethered to Sinestro's ring, why he even stays with Sinestro is baffling. Especially given how quickly Sinestro is willing to toss aside his green ring to forge another yellow one.

Additionally, this issue lacks the usual visual grace bestowed by other artists. Images are not as clear or as clean under Renato Guedes. The focus of the panels is fine, but the imagery fails to use the same smooth and pristine inks that Green Lantern readers have come to associate with the comic. The clarity is gone and instead, the images are coarser, visually, and even when Jim Calafiore takes over, his style fails to live up to the standard. Because of this, the comic loses some of its luster.

I understand the need for an issue like this, one that slows down the story and focuses itself for the future, but where the series had been gaining momentum, here it takes a step back and loses some of that energy. I get that readers need an occasional refresher, but these kinds of reminders can be executed on a single page. But Green Lantern #12 is an issue focused solely on exposition, and after a year of the new DCU, I think readers can be trusted to flow the threads of a story, regardless of how detailed it is.

GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 Spotlight

This month, DC Comics will release its next batch of Annuals. These special oversized issues will not only build off of the events in their respective series, but will also greatly impact the expanding DC Universe. Every day this week on THE SOURCE, we'll be putting individual spotlights on each of these Annual issues by talking to various writers, artists, and editors to give you special sneak peeks at what's to come! Next up is GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver, which serves as a prologue to October's GREEN LANTERN crossover event, "Rise of the Third Army."

"Ethan has been a brilliant collaborator and co-creator since the beginning of GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH," Johns told THE SOURCE. "Introducing new concepts and revealing huge, enigmatic, dangerous and heroic characters to the Green Lantern universe is what we do best together. And we're hoping to continue that with GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1. I'm not sure anyone realizes what we have in store for them ... and we like it that way."

"The joy of working with Geoff Johns is his unique insight into DC Comics' wide array of heroes and villains, and the development of those names and costumes into fully realized, complex characters," added Van Sciver. "He gives hearts and souls to GREEN LANTERN's cast. And he's always got a plan.  It's always a pleasure to join him."

GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 flies into stores on August 29.
