Cloak and Dagger dust off the boots to face a whole new set of problems: this time, with Mister Negative!

"Good" and "Cloak and Dagger" have rarely been in the same sentences together. For all the effort that goes into making a series that works for them, there are little results to prove it. However, as Spider Island rolls around, we get a look at Ty and Tandy, and how they've been doing the last little while.
The Good

There's actually a lot to like about this issue. It's kind of in this self-referential state where Cloak and Dagger are aware of how mediocre they've been in the past, and how they seem to be shoved to the background of most comics. Hell, there's even a scene where Iron Fist wants Cloak to teleport them somewhere two blocks away: this illustrates the role they've been kind of pigeon-holed into.

I mean, the last time we saw anything major from each of them was Civil War (and the aftermath, in Dark X-Men), and even then it was only to teleport Captain America's Avengers around.

This issue also recaps a lot of hanging plot threads about the team, like their mutant status and their time on Utopia with the X-Men. I almost feel a little bad for Cloak and Dagger; they have so much potential as a duo, but they don't seem to be utilized in an effective manner for long.

I also really liked the duality of the comics' captions: having a set for Cloak and a set for Dagger really let us get inside both heroes' heads without it being at the expense of the other. I liked how their thoughts seemed to clash a bit; this will probably play a big role in the story to come.
The Bad

This issue ends kind of anti-climactically; it really gives me the impression that both of these characters won't be involved in a Spider-Man story, just merely with Spider-Man villains. I'm intrigued to see where this series goes, however, and will definitely be picking up the second issue.
The Verdict

At three issues, this mini-series seems to be a bit of a "standard" comic book story, if anything. If I had to guess, it might even fill the "Tie-In That Has Nothing To Do With The Main Story" space on my Crossover Bingo card.

However, due to some self-deprecating humour and the light-hearted tone, I give this book a hearty thumbs up. If it can keep on the right course, it will be a great tie-in coming out of Spider Island.

Marvel Links Scarlet Spider To "Spider-Island"

During Comic-Con International in San Diego, Marvel Comics wrapped their "Spider-Man And His Avenging Friends" panel in teasery fashion by flashing an image of a burning Spider hoodie across the screen. Many noticed the article of clothing as belonging to clone Spider-Man Ben Reilly who's brief status as Marvel's "official" web slinger in the '90s keeps him equally one of the most mocked and asked after characters in the publisher's stable.

Speculation on a return for Reilly has ran on message boards and blogs for years, often getting a chilly reception from Marvel executives, however today, Marvel gave hope to fans who want to see the hero again (and perhaps fodder for his detractors) by releasing San Diego's teaser image to the public with an explicit tie to the just-launched "Spider-Island" crossover story:



As "Spider-Island" deals with "Clone Saga" mastermind villain The Jackal, CBR News asked "Amazing Spider-Man" writer Dan Slott whether a mysterious character hidden in one of the Jackal's tubes could be Reilly during a recent interview on the crossover. "I feel it's a shame to waste any thought on Ben as a character because, well, he dissolved into a pile of goo," Slott said then. "So why waste time thinking about goo? I mean HOW COULD THAT GOO POSSIBLY EVER COME BACK? How? It's goo! It's almost like you'd need a Jell-O mold in the shape of Peter Parker to bring him back. Wait a sec...

"Look, all we know about 'Tubey McGee' is that he is a guy. The biggest clue we have about him is what the Jackal says, 'He's perfect. Down to the last cell. For all my years of obsessing over Parker's DNA, I have to admit I always dreamed of studying this prime specimen.' Hmm... Interesting."

It's time for some majorly crazy happenings as Spider-Island is in full swing. You would think Spider-Man's life would become easier if everyone started gaining spider-powers but Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos will make sure that is not the case.

Everyone in New York City is gaining spider-powers and you know that can't mean good things for Spider-Man.
The Good

I will admit that when I heard the premise for Spider-Island, I bowed and shook my head a little. The idea of everyone getting spider-powers seemed a little too much. Silly me. I should've known better and simply held onto my trust in Dan Slott. Ever since BIG TIME began, Spider-Man's gone through some pretty big changes. We've been seeing the build up to this story in little prelude snippets in recent issues but you don't need to have read those to know what's going on. Just know that the Jackal is involved and it's going to mean some a lot of bad shenanigans for Spidey.

Complimenting the story is Humberto Ramos' amazing art. In the calmer scenes he always manages to find the best and most unique angles in showing the characters. And when the action begins, you know his art will be a sight to be seen.
The Bad

There's a giant battle that takes place and it feels like it's contained to one small block rather than take place over all of New York City. Also, the fact that things are starting to look bad for Spidey again makes perfect sense but seeing a turn in his luck since BIG TIME began has been a nice change. In other words, be nice to Peter, Mr. Slott!
The Verdict

Spider-Island is here! The idea of New York City gaining spider-powers felt crazy but the execution by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos pays off. After months of tiny bits of set up, the action begins. Spider-Man will be in over his head when he discovers he's powers are no longer as unique as he thought. Slott brings in many guest stars and cameos but they don't feel forced. Slott sets up the action and Ramos knocks it out of the park. Ramos' art delivers what you would want and expect in a Spider-Man 'event.' This issue was so fun to read. We have big action, great art and lots of opportunities for craziness and excitement in the first part of this story. Slott has big plans in mind and you can see them about to explode onto the pages of Amazing Spider-Man.
