Alan Davis' original eight-issue run on his creation "ClanDestine" -- plus his two-issue "ClanDestine vs. the X-Men" follow-up -- was the sort of comic that was so much fun it was all the more painful that he left the series. (We won't talk about the well-intentioned but disastrous four issues by other creators.) But when Davis returned to the property a few years ago for a new five-issue limited series, it was hard to keep from feeling that it was a bit... lacking. Could it be that "ClanDestine" had already run its course?

With Davis writing and drawing a three-part story spanning "Fantastic Four Annual" #33, "Daredevil Annual" #1 and "Wolverine Annual" #1 this summer, that theory is being put to the test. And so far, with the first installment released, it feels like those doubts were misplaced. Davis wisely recognizes that most readers probably are unfamiliar with his earlier creation, so the viewpoint characters for "Fantastic Four Annual" #33 are the slightly-befuddled Human Torch and Thing, getting drawn into a story involving time travel and an extremely powerful little boy named Vincent.

Because we're seeing the events of "Fantastic Four Annual" #33, it cleverly allows Davis to show us just the portions of Vincent's life that the two members of the Fantastic Four directly interact with. As a result, it's a complete story for them, but there are still bigger, not-entirely-answered questions that presumably will get tackled in the remaining two chapters. The story itself jumps time and space rapidly (thanks in no small part to a temporal rift), and while it's a little disorienting at times, that appears to be exactly what Davis is going for. We get the Thing and Human Torch's confusion projected out to us, and while past exposure to "ClanDestine" gives the story an added punch (the story of Vincent has been held up and teased ever since the original series began, but never explored by Davis), it does stand well enough on its own.

Davis' usage of just these two members of the Fantastic Four is a good choice; not only because of the nature in which they're pulled into Vincent's life, of course, but their personalities. The Thing as the protective father figure for the young Vincent is inspired, working in a way that none of the other members could quite slot into. And in terms of the one who can effectively get sidelined but also provide raw fighting ability, you can't go wrong with the Human Torch. The pair also visually fit in well with the different shapes and sizes of the ClanDestine; the Thing up alongside the monstrously huge Walter is a great visual contrast (one smooth and blue, the other rocky and brown), and the sprite-sized Human Torch whizzing around is a great image. It's hard to go wrong with Davis' art; the crowds at Woodstock look fantastic, and the various monsters that Davis conjures up are creepy and dangerous looking.

I felt a little dubious about the ClanDestine characters getting trotted out for this story, but so far I'd call it a big success. Just the right amount of emphasis is given on them as supporting characters, while for fans of the original "ClanDestine" comics it's like they've just hit the jackpot. Will I be back for the remaining two chapters? Absolutely.

Alan Davis pulls double duty as writer and artist in this annual that reintroduces his creations, the mystical Clan Destine, to the larger Marvel Universe. The story starts strong; Davis's art is as good as it's ever been, and his characterization of Johnny and Ben left me hoping he'll get more time with the characters in future. Unfortunately, the book aims high, and tries to do too much with too many big ideas about time travel, family drama, and magical paradoxes. I admit, I'm not particularly familiar with Clan Destine, and it's hard to know much about them from this story alone. It may have faltered with the bigger picture, but Davis's take on the FF's resident odd couple made the book worth reading.

We travel back to T'Challa's roots and learn that Wakanda will be in great danger very soon.
The Good
I think what is really great about this issue is the fact that it is so self contained. If you decide to get this issue, it would be good to read the one that came immediately before it, but it's not even that necessary. The events that take place in FANTASTIC FOUR #608 are shrouded in mystery. The moments you find here are extremely compelling and serve to prepare readers for what seems will be a dark and very dreary future for the Black Panther and all of Wakanda. Yet, to prepare for this great event where the first will burn the skies (the Phoenix Force), T'Challa will need the power of the Black Panthers that came before him. There is a huge development in this issue, and although T'Challa is no longer the Black Panther, he does gain immense power and a whole lot of responsibility. Big things happen here, and it will be interesting to see T'Challa flex his power in upcoming issues as well as in his future appearances throughout the Marvel Universe. For a little while there is felt like Marvel didn't really know what to do with T'Challa; and it wasn't until this moment when the character is given this sort of blessing that it feels as though Hickman has finally given him his niche. It's also interesting to see the relationship between T'Challa and Reed reinforced in this book, and I look forward to seeing what that means for Wakanda and the Fantastic Four, and why it was destined for Reed to be present during T'Challa's blessing.

There were moments in this issue that definitely had me at the edge of my seat. Would T'Challa commit such a selfish act as to let his sister die so he can become the King and Black Panther once again? There was a lot of mysticism and fantasy in this issue, and some of the themes and elements therein really reminded me of Hudlin's Black Panther series which really delved into this idea of a Panther God and what the matle represents. Aside from those issues, that mysticism associated with the character has not really been utilized. I, however, really felt it was appropriate for this story and I am glad Hickman made it the focal point of his issue.

This issue does a great job setting up and alluding to the events that are sure to take place in the very near future; and something tells me that Wakanda will very soon be falling from grace and will suffer. It will be interesting to see how this develops as well as the way that T'Challa utilizes his newfound powers.

The Bad
I think that if there were any moments I considered to be bad or out of place, the moments where Shuri, Sue and Storm are gathered together to fight mystical powers -- that felt a little bit out of place. While it was great seeing these three characters appear together in the same panel, it's unclear what their motives are for what they are doing.

The Verdict
I think a good superhero comic not only pulls you into the story, but it also leaves the reader with a lot more questions than answers, even if the issue itself has concluded. This book was the second part of a two-part story, but by the end, I found myself with a lot more questions than andwers. What is this new bond between Reed and T'Challa? How will T'Challa's new role manifest itself and what powers (if any) has he gained? And what does this mean for Shuri as the Black Panther of Wakanda? Finally, it's alluded in this issue that Wakanda will suffer (and Hickman implies why), so what will lead to these problems? There is definitely a lot to think about in tho issue.

I like the art a lot. I think the style really fits the story, and the use of so many warm colors was appropriate for setting the tone and the mood of the book. I think that intertwining Wakanda and the Fantastic Four is interesting, since Black Panther and the FF share a very close history. I think this really works and I look forward to seeing the way it develops. The issue is also predominantly self-contained; and if you haven't been reading, it will be easy to follow along.

Black Bolt and the Inhumans return to the pages of FF.
The Good
The issue opens with a look into the past, bringing readers up to speed (at least somewhat) with Black Bolt and the Inhumans and the future they helped save from the clutches of the council of Reeds. If you are unfamiliar with the story behind Black Bolt and the Inhumans, where and who they are and why they are returning "home," then you may not initially understand what is happening at the start of this issue. It is, however, interesting; and while it may not be a good jumping on point for new readers in the sense that it plays with a lot of concepts already deeply embedded in continuity; it's a good place to start reading because it is the start of a new story arc.

The art by Nick Dragotta and Chris Sotomayor is really, really pretty. I've been a big fan of their work on FF and think they capture the outer space element really well. Their ability to convey emotions through the expressions of these characters is fantastic.

I think Hickman provides a really great balance between the light-hearted fun (that panel with the "yellow love slug" is adorable) and humor with a lot of heavy plot development (a lot of the Inhumans and Black Bolt stuff isn't easy to take in if you're unfamiliar). The scene in the car where a young Franklin Richards is speaking to his future self is great too, and the dynamic between them is just really very sweet. That's probably the best scene in the issue.

The Bad
There wasn't really anything bad about this issue, in my opinion.

The Verdict
I think this is a great set-up issue. It really does a great job setting up this story that brings back some pretty cool (and very powerful) characters to the series, but also maintains a balance between a heavy plot and some lighthearted, funny dialogue. Lots of moments where you will find yourself chuckling when reading this issue, so be sure to expect that. I really enjoyed the art and the story in this issue and I am definitely interested in seeing how Black Bolt and the Inhumans come into play in the future of this series.

We are called Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak. Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced. Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed. Weaknesses like... emotions, pain. You will become like us. You will be upgraded.
