One of the things I've alternately enjoyed and found frustrating about "Fables" is its ability to shift tone at the drop of a hat. Sometimes it's silly when you want serious or vice versa. In "Fables" #115, Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham are bringing in the creepy and this sudden shift is most welcome right about now.

The bulk of the issue follows Therese, one of Snow White and Bigby Wolf's cubs as she's lured into the realm of Toyland. While that may sound joyful and wonderful, the fact that other names for the world are Discardia and Madland does not bode well for Therese. Willingham tips his hand to the reader but not to the young cub; we know right from the start Therese being lured into by the toy boat known as Mr. Steampuddle is not a good thing at all. As you watch Therese interact with the discarded and ruined toys of Toyland, it's hard to keep from seeing how their plaintive request to be accompanied by Therese won't work. They're preying on her vulnerability and the Raggedy Andy doll's "Are you my mama?" is both heartbreaking and chilling.

It helps that Buckingham and colorist Lee Loughridge portray Toyland as a gray and brown muddy wasteland. This is a place unsettling in part by its lack of feature; this is truly the land of the discarded and Willingham and Buckingham are making it live up to its name. The image of Therese standing up to her ankles in water with scraps of toy around her and the castle off in the distance is a wonderfully eerie moment; even before you know the name of where she is, the instant visual impression you get is of someone lost.

The rest of the issue's stories are also compelling in their own way. The reintroduction of the traitorous Mrs. Spratt into the Fable community is handled well and in a way that doesn't make the rest of the Fables appear stupid. While the "Revolution in Oz" storyline is slow-moving due to having just three pages an issue, Shawn McManus' art looks gorgeous and for that alone I'm on board with it continuing at its own pace.

"Fables" is clearly moving towards a big shift in the status quo of the series (especially with Mister Dark gone), but it's to the credit of Willingham, Buckingham and company that I can't figure out what it will be. If this current storyline is any indication, we're in for a strong ride. This is an excellent installment, and my attention is firmly grabbed.

Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque use "American Vampire" #25 both to wrap up their "Death Race" story and also set up what's to come in the next 25 issues -- but perhaps we're getting a little ahead of ourselves.

Travis and Skinner Sweet face off one more time in "American Vampire" #25, but in many ways it's not their actual fight that's interesting, it's the history and the revelations that come out from the fight. Don't get me wrong, the actual tussle between Travis and Skinner is inventive and there are some great surprises lurking around the corner at several points in their death match. What works well for me is the dissection of not only their enmity but also Travis's observations on the changes in Skinner over the years. It's a dangerous moment, one that perhaps signposts the moments still ahead; it seems change is in the air for "American Vampire."

For those just interested more in the lore and mythology of "American Vampire," that's on display as well. Travis' attempts to destroy Skinner are fun and the different sides on the human/vampire conflict are lining up faster and faster. As for the end of Travis's story, I feel like it's right out of the movies of this time period that "Death Race" so beautifully apes and it's the perfect conclusion.

"American Vampire" has been blessed with some great guest artists, but Rafael Albuquerque's art continues to be a huge draw month after month. The entire first page is drawn not only beautifully, but quite effectively. In the opening panel, Travis's body sails across the page into the car perfectly; we're given an instant sensation of movement and you can actually feel the impact as his back smacks into the side of the vehicle, even without the sound effect. Dave McCaig's colors help bring this to life too with a beautiful splash of red and orange around the impact site.

Shifting down to the block that forms panels 2-4, Skinner's shadow is sliding towards Travis; we still haven't seen any part of Skinner, but his presence is instantly known. Likewise, Travis is crumpled in front of the car and you immediately understand his pain. With panels 3-4, we get Skinner's arm and hand and the shifts between those panels form a careful transition -- Skinner's claws coming out and Travis shrinking back. You get what's Skinner's about to do and see an animated reaction in response. It all leads up to that fifth and final panel, where Skinner is finally seen from the waist up and his strike into Travis's chest (completely with a careful blood spray around and behind Travis) makes you wonder if this fight ended on the first page. It's all told through Albuquerque's art in such a fluid and graceful manner that I feel like a lot of artists could learn from him.

There's an epilogue in "American Vampire" #25 shifting location but also tying into all the ideas we'd seen in this issue. As a result, it works both as epilogue and prologue for what's to come; that earlier mention of change being in the air is especially true here and it's a strong springboard for the next 25 issues and beyond. As long as Snyder and Albuquerque are around, so am I.

Last issue set things up with Sleeping Beauty and Ali Baba. This issue has plenty of action, storytelling and gorgeous art that should not be missed.
It's never been a better time to be a fan of Bill Willingham's FABLES. This spin-off series with Phil Jimenez lives up to our expectations.

The Good
It might be because I discovered FABLES around the same time my daughter was getting into the actual fable stories but I was immediately pulled into the concept of these more mature versions. For over one hundred issues we've seen one great story after the next. The idea of a series focusing on more of the characters in different settings is a completely welcomed one.

Last issue set up the journey for Ali Baba in seeking out his reward, which happened to involve Sleeping Beauty. Now the two, along with Jonah the imp (who is extremely knowledgable in American studies). Throw in the threat of the Snow Queen and we're in for fun and exciting time.

While we've seen stories set outside of the real world in FABLES, here we're deeply immersed in a place where Frost Giants can roam without any concern over limitations of the mundies learning more than they would be capable of handling. There is a feeling of excitement as we are almost in unfamiliar territory even if we know some of the basic backgrounds on the character (and we do get some of the story of Sleeping Beauty).

Phil Jimenez's art is absolutely amazing. FABLES has always been graced with gorgeous art and this series is proving that the same rule applies. Everything simply looks spectacular. Andrew Dalhouse's colors also amp up the overall vibe that is being conveyed in this story. I could stare at the pages all day.

The Bad
I can't I fully know where this story is going but that's not a bad thing. I was under the impression that this series would solely focus on the fairest ladies in the FABLES universe. The inclusion of Ali Baba and Jonah are indeed making it all interesting.

The Verdict
Fans of FABLES or those looking for a gorgeous adventure with familiar characters should be reading this series. In the tradition of FABLES, we get a modern and more mature take on the fairy tale characters we grew up with. Willingham has created a world rich with characters more interesting than their true counterparts and a wide world full of potential for future stories. Phil Jimenez and Andrew Dalhouse make reading Willingham's great story even better. I really liked the first issue but I can say I loved this one.

I'll admit that I'm a sucker for Phil Jimenez's pencils, which is how I ended up buying "Fairest" #2. After a lackluster story in the opening chapter, my original plan was to just wait until the fall when the next creative team comes on board, but Jimenez's art is always gorgeous and with Sleeping Beauty finally in the main story I thought I'd give the series just one more chance.

On the plus side, "Fairest" is visually one of the fairest in land -- or rather the comic market. Jimenez and inker Andy Lanning work well together. Ali Baba and Briar Rose both look just amazing; every detail is in place from errant locks of hair to a rustling, ornate gown for Sleeping Beauty. Jimenez and Lanning can do a lot with expressions; the cold gaze of the Snow Queen (no pun intended) when she states, "Run" is withering and the screams of terror when the goblin horde attacks our heroes feel genuine. These expressive faces make the featureless snow giants that much creepier as a result, a nice touch to a new menace.

Jimenez is one of those artists who can pack an immense amount of detail onto a page, like the royal hall in the palace and keep it from feeling cluttered or overworked. It helps that he and Lanning use thin, fine lines as well as Jimenez's understanding of how to lay out a page to draw the reader's eyes to just the right places. Some of the layouts are especially nice, like the final page with the Snow Queen's face framed in the bottom half. It feels like a piece of fine art with its lush composition and it's a reminder on why Jimenez is such an in-demand artist.

Unfortunately, the story itself still fails to deliver. Ali Baba and Jonah the imp are both still thoroughly annoying without even the pretense of charm present. Sleeping Beauty at least gets a few barbs in, but it feels like she's less of a character and more of an object. The fact that she apparently doesn't even know her own origin (hard to believe considering that she lived in modern day Earth for many years) is unbelievable, as well as a thin excuse to retell the set-up of "Sleeping Beauty" for a quarter of the comic. "Fairest" still feels uninspired and slightly lazy. There's remarkably little plot here and as much as I appreciate page after page of Jimenez's art, I'd have liked a little more meat to what he draws. Pages of them running and then telling a story that everyone is familiar with is hardly riveting material, doubly so when it's accompanied by non-stop bickering.

If you found "Fairest" #1 disappointing, nothing will have changed in your opinion of this series based on #2. The comic gets extremely high marks for the art, because it's outstanding. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the book. Jimenez and Lanning are doing the heavy lifting and while I'd love to see them come back for another "Fairest" story down the line, here's hoping for them being paired with a different writer for their next go-round.
