CORNELL Combines Politics, UFOs In Vertigo's SAUCER COUNTRY

CitazioneIn Saucer Country, the realistic meets the fantastic, as writer Paul Cornell and artist Ryan Kelly juxtapose the volatile political climate of a U.S. presidential campaign with the world of alien abductions and UFOs.

The story, which debuts in March from Vertigo, centers on Arcadia Alvarado, the Mexican-American governor of New Mexico. As she's about to embark on a campaign for president, she and her alcoholic ex are abducted by aliens.

Suddenly, her campaign for the presidency takes on new meaning as she begins a quest for answers about what happened to her.

The comic will also include accounts of "true stories" about people who claim to have been abducted by aliens, much like the piece Cornell wrote for the recent Vertigo anthology Strange Adventures.

As Cornell has backed away from one of his "New 52" books, Stormwatch, now writing only the ongoing series Demon Knights, the launch of Saucer Country represents his first title for Vertigo.

Newsarama talked to the writer to find out more about the passion he feels toward the story he's telling and what readers can expect from Saucer Country.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO GRAPHIC NOVEL TO HIT SHELVES IN NOVEMBER 2012

(THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO graphic novel cover by Lee Bermejo).

DC Entertainment Announces Top-Notch Creative Team Including Denise Mina, Lee Bermejo, Leonardo Manco and Andrea Mutti

Best-selling comic book and graphic novel publisher DC Entertainment announced today the creative team for the highly-anticipated new graphic novel based on Stieg Larsson's international sensation THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.  Crime author Denise Mina will write the book, with the cover image created by Lee Bermejo and art from Leonardo Manco and Andrea Mutti.   DC Entertainment's Vertigo imprint is working closely with the estate of Stieg Larsson and Hedlund Literary Agency to adapt the book, which will be released in November 2012.

"We're thrilled to be adapting this incredible story into a series of graphic novels," stated Karen Berger, executive editor, Vertigo. "Denise, Lee, Leonardo and Andrea have such great passion for the material and stylistically they're a perfect match to bring it to comics life. Their beautifully dark and visceral work will certainly blow us all away."

Scottish writer Denise Mina is the acclaimed author of DECEPTION and FIELD OF BLOOD, and is considered a leading international crime fiction novelist. Mina has also written for Vertigo's HELLBLAZER series and most recently, she wrote A SICKNESS IN THE FAMILY graphic novel, also for Vertigo.

Lee Bermejo is fresh off the critical and sales success of graphic novel BATMAN: NOEL, a New York Times best-seller and follow-up to the 2008 hit JOKER. Bermejo has also worked numerous comic series including Vertigo's HELLBLAZER and the Vertigo Crime graphic novels, among others.

Argentinean artist Leonardo Manco has worked extensively on Vertigo's HELLBLAZER comic, while Italian artist Andrea Mutti first worked with Vertigo on graphic novel THE EXECUTOR, and then worked on the imprint's popular DMZ comic series.

DC Entertainment is the worldwide leader in producing best-selling graphic novels and comic books, including best-selling Vertigo titles SANDMAN, FABLES, 100 BULLETS and ROAD TO PERDITION.

Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy is an international publishing juggernaut, with more than 60 million books sold worldwide and reaching the top of numerous best seller lists. Published by Knopf in the U.S., sales for all three books exceed 17 million copies, including digital sales of 3.5 million copies. Since September 2008, when THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was published in hardcover, Larsson's books have been a constant presence on bestseller lists across America.

The various storylines in Larsson's Millennium Trilogy revolve around enigmatic and dangerous computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist.

One of the nice things about "Fables" is that every time you think you know what's coming next, creator Bill Willingham will throw a strange side story into the mix. That's more or less what we get with "Fables" #113, except in this case it's a series of short stories. And the connection between them? Well... there is one and there isn't.

The bulk of the issue is "A Magic Life," with art by Zander Cannon and Jim Fern. All of the stories take place in the past, but this one is understandably the most important in terms of the greater "Fables" world-building structure. Willingham takes this time to explain in part how Fabletown was founded without getting instantly squashed by the Adversary, and in the process gives background on Mr. Kadabra, a character that up until now only appeared briefly as a corpse in "Cinderella: Fables Are Forever" #1. It's a fun look at how the Empire was created, and does some clever things with the way that magic spells work in the "Fables" world.

For the most part, I like Cannon and Fern's art. Most of the characters are drawn in a neat, crisp style, and the war between the Emperor and Kadabra looks outstanding. Occasionally the poses seem strangely stiff though (the final page has a great drawing of the Beast, but Cinderella looks more like a mannequin based on her stance), and it's a bit distracting when it crops up.

Tied more closely together are "A Delicate Balance" and "The Way of the Woods." The former, drawn by P. Craig Russell, is a short and sweet story about Fable-style justice. The story itself is sharp and to the point, although the lack of a real ending is bound to frustrate some readers. On the other hand, Russell's delicate and gorgeous art will probably assuage some of those hurt feelings. "The Way of the Woods" really doesn't have a plot at all, although it does tie into "A Delicate Balance" and its aftermath. It's not bad (and it helps that Ramon Bachs pencils it), but it feels a little pointless because of its lack of drive or direction.

Adam Hughes draws "Porky Pining" and it's no surprise that Hughes' art is amazing. Those three pages have their own special look and feel: soft and delicate characters, beautiful page layouts, and a coloring scheme that reminds me of ancient book plates. The story itself is a bit of a trifle and a laugh, but it's fun. It is an odd end to the comic, though; you find yourself turning the page and the book is over.

In many ways, that's the one problem you'll find with "Fables" #113. All the individual stories have their strengths, but aside from "stories set in the past" there's no connection between them, and the comic itself ends with no warning. I'm not saying a collection of shorts needs to be unified, but considering that the book starts with what appears to be a framing device drawn by Rick Leonardi and Ron Randall, the lack of a closing page at the other end is a bit odd.

Still, the stories are all entertaining in their own way, and the art teams are rather great if I do say so myself. Long time "Fables" fans will probably appreciate "A Magic Life" the most, and if you focus the most on it, the rest feel more like bonus features. Approached from that angle, "Fables" #113 is most definitely a success.

Cover come sempre fenomenale, eh.
Certo che questa tendenza a ritornare spesso a raccontare il passato, ad approfondire magari, determinati episodi, dà da pensare. Come se non si riuscisse più a trovare una nuova vincente strada da imboccare.
