Effigy is a book that puts character first. Much like the book's simple yet engaging debut, issue #2 continues to build and embellish Chondra Jackson's complicated past and present, even as the book's inciting incident continues to feel a bit secondary. It's a tough balancing act to pull off but one Tim Seeley ultimately does, his characterization, particularly Chondra's sharp and concise. The book's overall narrative still stands out as in need of firmer footing, but Seeley's ability to create investment through conversation does wonders in masking those flaws. Whether it's the increasingly entertaining awkwardness between Chondra and Moore to the still awkward but endearing reunion with Edie, Seeley's assured script sings with self-awareness and social commentary. Just as confident is artist Marely Zarcone. Much of the book's investing quality comes from his fantastic characterization, his use of facial expression, coupled with subtle mannerisms, making for an immediately relatable tone. If the creators can maintain that investment while also ratcheting up the mystery, Effigy may just surprise. -Jeff

PREVIEW: WOLF MOON #4

Over halfway through its run, Wolf Moon has lost some steam. Cullen Bunn continues to mix the murder with the mystery, but there's only so many ways you can have a wolf shake someone like a chew toy before it feels old hat. The confrontation from last issue gets added focus here, which is unfortunate given that Bunn does hardly anything with it beyond setting up his next creepy, plot serving reveal. At this point we've had plenty of those, and while lead Dillon still has his moments, the overall investment we have in him and his cause has started to dwindle. Likewise, Jeremy Haun's pencils have begun to suffer from déjà vu. Wide open maws, splayed claws, arterial spray gushing like a busted sprinkler – at times the book reads as if on repeat, all monster mash with little heart. With two issues left to go there's still hope for a strong finale, but as of now Wolf Moon is a book weighed down by its own silver bullets. -Jeff

Vertigo's anthologies in their post-Berger era have been something of a mixed bag. Fortunately, this week's Strange Sports Stories stands as one of the better ones. Featuring a mix of well-established talent and mostly-unkonw up and comers, it's a weird, interesting read. The book opens with a short by the legendary Gilbert Hernandez about a few kids playing kickball. It's nothing short of bizarre and none of Hernandez's trademark voice is lost in the editorial process. From there, the shorts are a bit of a mixed bag, but mostly stand strong. A piece about futuristic dodgeball is particularly memorable, though the pieces following aren't quite as strong. Overall though, the debut of Strange Sports Stories is a lot of fun, with a great Paul Pope cover to seal the deal. -Tres
