91. Thor Mighty Avenger

One of the things that comic book companies have always struggled with is how, exactly, to respond to the film success of their comic book characters. DC seemed fully unprepared for just HOW big the 1989 Batman movie was going to be, outside of a wonderful film adaptation by Denny O'Neil and Jerry Ordway, while their response to the next few Batman films was to release one-shots starring the villains from the respective movies. There were a lot of really good one-shots released at that time (John Ostrander, in particular, really did some excellent work), but it was still a bit of a restrained response to Batman's film success.

When Marvel movies became hits in the early 2000, Marvel, too, didn't seem to know what to do with the attention, either. After one of the very last film adaptations for the first Spider-Man movie, Marvel began to go the route of coming out with a few new series that theoretically could appeal to the people who were watching the new movies. So when Spider-Man 2 came out, there was a bunch of Doctor Octopus miniseries. Later, when Wolverine Origins came out, there was a Weapon X: First Class series with Wolverine and Gambit.

And thus, when Thor was released, Marvel put out a new, out of continuity, all ages Thor title called Thor: The Mighty Avenger by Roger Langridge, Chris Samnee and Matt Wilson.

86. Wolverine and the X-Men

In 2011, Jason Aaron wrote a major X-Men crossover called Schism. The concept of the event was that Cyclops needed some of the youngest members of the X-Men (which, by this point, had all moved to an island nation off the coast of San Francisco) to kill some bad guys. It all nominally worked out, but it led to a major conflict between Wolverine and Cyclops. Wolverine believed that their younger members needed to go to school, while Cyclops felt that they had to get used to the new world reality where they had to essentially train as soldiers from childhood.

Eventually, this schism led Wolverine and a number of other members of the X-Men to return to Westchester to re-open Xavier's School for Mutants with Wolverine stepping behind the desk and becoming the headmaster of the school (with Kitty Pryde as his co-headmaster, because he really needed someone else to help him run the thing. The "thing he does best" that he talks about when he says he is the best there is at what he does is not administrative work). The re-opened school was re-named the Jean Grey School for Mutants.

81. Batman: White Knight

At the heart of Batman: White Knight, by writer/artist Sean Gordon Murphy (with colors by the brilliant Matt Hollingsworth), is the question of what it means to be a "good guy." In the opening of the series, Gotham City has been ravaged by years of battles between Batman and his Rogues Gallery. Due to a special drug, the Joker has finally been cured of his insanity and now, as plain old Jack Napier, he is a free man due to questions about police brutality (about the whole "letting Batman just beat the hell out of him" deal) and Jack now wants to be the true hero of Gotham City by running for City Council and trying to fix things from within the system...

76. Black Mirror

Scott Snyder's first extended Batman story was a twisty tale of Dick Grayson (as Batman) and Commissioner Gordon as they each deal with problems with their past. In Dick's case, he encounters the daughter of the gangster who killed his parents while Gordon is dealing with the return of his psychologically disturbed son, James (the kid who Batman saved from dying in a fall from the bridge in Batman: Year One). Their intertwined stories make up the 11 issue arc, with short stories combining to form the larger narrative. Snyder is joined by two brilliant artists, Jock (who does the Batman stuff) and Francesco Francavilla (who does the Commissioner Gordon stuff).

73. Kill or Be Killed

Kill or Be Killed, by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (with Elizabeth Breitweiser on colors), is about a young man named Dylan who is suddenly approached by a demon (or a hallucination, it really doesn't particularly matter) that insists that he kill someone every month or the demon will kill him. Dylan eventually discovers a truly evil person from his past and he kills him and the pain subsides...for a while, but then the demon is back and Dylan has to become a killer vigilante and what Brubaker and Phillips nail so well is just how difficult it is for someone to actually become a killer vigilante...

67. Aquaman by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado

Beyond just telling some awesome comic book adventures, Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis (along with inker Joe Prado and colorist Rod Reis) had a mission with their run on Aquaman in The New 52, which was to make him COOL again.

65. Fables

Fables was Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha's epic story concerning the adventures of the inhabitants of Fabletown, all characters who come from fairy tales and folklore, like Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.

They live in Fabletown because they were driven out of the magical world that they used to live in (called the Homelands), by an evil villain known as the Adversary, who has conquered most of the Homelands.

The early stories followed mostly Snow White, who was the aide to the Mayor of Fabletown (Old King Cole) and Bigby Wolf (the Big Bad Wolf), who was the Sheriff of Fabletown, and their Sam and Diane relationship.

58. Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's Wonder Woman

Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's run on Wonder Woman, following the New 52 continuity reboot, began with Wonder Woman coming to the aid of a young woman who is being hunted down by the gods themselves. They learn that it is because she is pregnant...with the baby of Zeus! Wonder Woman must then vow to protect her against the other children of Zeus who want her dead before her baby is born. The fight goes to Paradise Island, where the Amazons are turned against each other by Zeus' daughter, Strife. Wonder Woman stops her, but in the process learns a shocking secret about herself that she is Zeus' daughter, as well!

54. Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca's Darth Vader

When Marvel got the license to Star Wars in 2014, they quickly assigned two of their very best writers to handle the initial two ongoing series, Star Wars (by Jason Aaron) and Darth Vader by Kieron Gillen, who was joined by Salvador Larroca and Edgar Delgado on art duties.

50. Batman Incorporated

This one is tricky, because Grant Morrison's acclaimed Batman run mostly took place in the previous decade, but he did have the Return of Bruce Wayne in 2010 that resulted in Bruce coming back from the "dead" and taking his place as Batman again, but this time as part of a brand-new team of international Batmen known as Batman Incorporated.

Morrison explained his approach on this new series to CBR back in 2010, "I tend to switch them around because when you've got just a few hooks, people tend to get a bit bored. I think what I've discovered with Batman over the past few years through interaction with the fans online is, people love to play with the mysteries and come up with ideas and debate and talk, and I wouldn't want to lose that. This is obviously going to have its fair share of clues and build-ups but it won't require quite as much back reading maybe as some of the other ones.

41. Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey's Moon Knight

One of the standard tropes when it comes to Moon Knight is that he has multiple personalities. During their brief but epic run together on Moon Knight, Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire introduced the concept that Moon Knight also had multiple SUPERHERO personalities. He had the standard over-the-top Moon Knight persona, flying around New York City in a cape and a Moon-Jet, but he also had Mr. Knight, who wears a mask and suit and tackles the more standard crimes in the city, like kidnappings.

40. Tom Taylor's Injustice: Gods Among Us (Year One-Year Three)

Injustice: Gods Among Us was a hugely popular video game where Superman has gone insane and become a tyrant and Batman has to go to alternate realities to bring the Justice League from the main DC Universe into this reality so that they can help him take Superman down. That, of course, is demonstrated through a lot of awesome one-on-one fights between many different superhero characters (essentially, it's a plot designed to come to a point where you could reasonably have Batman and Wonder Woman fighting against each other).
