The decision to follow up one Batman/TMNT crossover with another so soon is baffling, and it certainly isn't doing this series any favors. Not that Batman/TMNT Adventures does much to break out of the usual crossover mold in general. The series continues to move slowly, focusing an odd amount of attention on the villains considering that the heroes themselves are only just starting to cross paths. The book does become more entertaining as the Bat-family butts heads with the Turtles. It's clear from that extended scene that this series is striving to be more comedic than its predecessor. That helps set it apart to some extent, but not enough. Perhaps what's most frustrating is that the series isn't doing much to take advantage of the Batman: The Animated Series setting. It certainly doesn't capture the distinctive Bruce Timm character designs or the dark, Art Deco-flavored environments. If anything, the cartoonish art is more reminiscent of The Batman or even Batman: The Brave and the Bold. -Jesse

Batman/TMNT Adventures #6

Matthew K. Manning and Jon Sommariva take an unexpected approach with the final chapter of this crossover. Having more or less wrapped up their main storyline in issue #5, they focuses on telling an epilogue story in this finale that further ties up loose ends. The benefit of that approach is that it allows the creators to jump from the classic Batman: The Animated Series timeline to that of The New Batman Adventures. The addition of Tim Drake and the aging of Dick Grayson both serve to add spice to the story. It's also fun to see the creators fully embrace the silliness of the team-up and this Kraang conflict, even to the point of mirroring that silliness through an old-timey Gray Ghost serial. And by this point, the series has managed to build a pretty strong bond between the Bat family and the Turtles (even if the first Batman/TMNT continues to overshadow this one) The standalone format of this issue does have its drawbacks, as there's a rushed quality to the pacing and the way the Turtles drop in and back out of the story. It's almost as if this issue were a compressed version of a proposed sequel mini-series. And there's the problem that Sommariva's kinetic art style feels more suited to the world of TMNT than the moody, angular DC Animated Universe. But in the end, this series proves once again that Batman and the Ninja Turtles are two great tastes that go great together. -Jesse
