Over the past few years, books like The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Howard the Duck, and anything involving Deadpool have carved out a rather wacky niche in the Marvel Universe. As the title and cover should make perfectly clear, this space just got a bit more crowded as the Great Lakes Avengers are back on the scene. Like those other books, this is filled with humorous, occasionally hilarious, one-liners and the kind of superhero banter you've come to expect from Marvel's more eccentric side. Val Ventura, Big Bertha, and Doorman are about as unconventional as heroes come, as are Detroit's local villains like Firebrand and the fork-pun-spewing Pitchfork. Artist Will Robson cartoonish style fits in perfectly here, and he handles size-shifting heroes Val and Bertha with ease. Simply put, if you enjoy the wackier side of Marvel, the GLA should find a home on your pull list. - Joe

There's something oddly appropriate about the fact that Marvel's best current Avengers comic stars the absolute dumbest incarnation of the team. This series captures all the pathetic charm of the GLA, a team that can now officially claim "Not even good enough for Squirrel Girl" on their collective resume. Much of the appeal of this series stems from the fact that writer Zac Gorman celebrates the absurdity of these Z-List heroes without ever selling them short or disrespecting them. They may be losers, but they have heart and a hefty amount of emotional pathos. That's especially clear with Immortal Man, who finds himself in a very depressing situation at the moment. Will Robson's art style also pairs very well with Gorman's lighthearted yet meaty approach to the series. It's expressive and sleek, made all the more inviting by the vivid colors of Tamra Bonvillain. I do wish the series was moving a bit more rapidly, but it's tough to complain when the book is this much fun. -Jesse
