There's an inherent problem with issues designed to clean up retroactive continuity: they can get pretty messy. Supergirl #8 actually starts out on a very strong note, as the title character meets her cousin and embraces him and his family as part of her own. That felt like a very genuine and human moment for the Girl of Steel. Unfortunately, it loses a little bit of its power when we learn that it's only because of the retcon. When Superman goes out of his way to explain the continuity changes and how he was altered, the issue seems cluttered and unfocused. That story worked very well within the context of the Superman books. Trying to explain it in-universe makes it a lot less compelling. Matias Bergara's art also leaves something to be desired. His cartoonish style gives every character exaggerated facial expressions and overly slender bodies. His figures also never seem to fit within the confines of the story that he's illustrating, although the brief glimpses of another heroine in National City offer an intriguing tease of the next issue. For this issue, the writing was good, but the art needs to catch up to it. -Blair
