Serving as a direct companion to the not-so-happy events unfolded in issue #9, American Vampire's latest ratchets up the danger even as it brings the book's more mysterious elements into the light. Scott Snyder's script, already a powder keg of double crosses and hidden agendas, lights an effective final match, setting up what's sure to be a similarly explosive finale. While mostly a lead in to said end, the issue continues the series' recent stretch of strong, character focused issues, with highlights ranging from Pearl and Felicia's heart to heart to Skinner Sweet's sudden, raw vulnerability. Rafael Albuquerque's artistic prowess remains just as appealing in the black of space as it is on the swirling sands of Earth, again delivering a number of frantic action set pieces and somber moments. His sleek lines and aggressive blacks are further punctuated by Dave McCaig's subtly emphatic color palette, their collaboration as inviting as it dramatic. -Jeff

Survivor's Club asks what if the survivors of all your favorite 70s and 80s horror films joined forces. That premise alone is enough to warrant a read, but what Lauren Beukes and Dale Halvorsen do with that premise is what's really promising. When these survivors come together it's mostly as a support group in this first issue, that long-game approach is heartening, it shows that these characters matter more than your typical horror movie stereotypes. Of course, there still is the horror and mystery elements present, but just enough to keep us intrigued. Ryan Kelly beautifully handles both halves of that spectrum, nimbly expressing the characters feelings while also delivering on the disturbing images. There's still much that needs to be proven in the next few issues, and aside from a few nitpicks like the color being a bit too bright for a horror comic, this a promising start. –Levi

This is one case where a comic's creative team is enough to justify a blind purchase. Twilight Children #1 is every bit as good as you'd expect from a series featuring writer Gilbert Hernandez, artist Darwyn Cooke and colorist Dave Stewart. What begins a seemingly straightforward tale of drama in a small, foreign town quickly builds layers of intrigue and even supernatural fantasy. Hernandez builds a compelling setting with a strange secret, and Cooke and Stewart give it a strong sense of life and vitality. Cooke's elegant line-work is a joy to behold regardless of the subject matter. The story has just the right blend of fantasy, tragedy and sex appeal to take advantage of Cooke's talents and weave a story that reads like nothing else on the stands. -Jesse

The Twilight Children #1 (Published by Vertigo; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

What would have been a sleepy introduction by Gilbert Hernandez is electrified thanks to some out-of-this-world cartooning by Darwyn Cooke in the first issue of The Twilight Children. Hernandez focuses mainly on establishing a certain atmosphere for this small coastal town - it reminds me of the BBC's Broadchurch, where the real hook isn't the chilling happenings going on in town, but the secrets that everyone is hiding underneath. From a surprisingly touching love affair to the sad story of a drunk's despair, Hernandez paints an effective picture with his characters - it's just that the plot doesn't go nearly as far as it needs to in order to hook readers. Thankfully, Hernandez also has Cooke, who lends so much emotion to his characters with his expert artwork. Cooke can go from mysterious to sexy to funny to sad from panel to panel, and it's his work that will ultimately give The Twilight Children a chance. Hopefully Hernandez's story will pick up in time to justify having this master at work.
