The pitch for Unfollow is simple – the multi-billionaire creator of a Twitter-like service is dying, and he's splitting his money between 140 random characters – but the execution is anything but simple. The best thing about Rob Williams' script here is his willingness to be vague, to enter scenes late and cut them short, to let the action tell the story. Unfollow is an ensemble, world-spanning cast with equal levels of topical drama and absurd levity. The tone is such a strength for this book and that extends to Mike Dowling's art. His characters are all unique and they feel real, these are real people with real world problems. Unfollow is another huge success in Vertigo's recent comeback. –Levi

A Si Spencer comic is usually worth reading for the clever dialogue and wordplay alone. Slash and Burn certainly has those elements in its favor. Spencer is especially skilled at exploring the psychology of his new protagonist (a respected firefighter with a few skeletons in her closet) and the almost romantic fascination she has for fire. But in this case, quality characterization goes hand in hand with a solid premise. By the end of this first issue, there's more than enough to hook the reader. Max Dunbar's art has its appeals as well. Certain characters are a little tough to distinguish visually, but Dunbar creates a nice flow on the page as he depicts his firefighting heroes hard at work. -Jesse

It's tough to get over the novelty of seeing Gilbert Hernandez and Darwyn Cooke' collaborating on a comic. The pairing has yet to disappoint, as Twilight Children has quickly established itself as the best of a strong crop of new Vertigo titles. This issue builds on the mystery of the domes of light plaguing a remote fishing village, as strange disappearances and transformations begin unfolding with increasing frequency. Despite the sci-fi trappings, the eclectic cast of down-to-earth characters and the romantic intrigue read like classic Hernandez. And regardless of subject matter, Cooke brings a lush, vibrant quality to every page. The town and its inhabitants are lovely and elegant in a way only Cooke can achieve. -Jesse

Slash & Burn #1 (Published by Vertigo; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

Si Spurrier has a great hook with Slash & Burn, although his firefighting series starts with a slow burn thanks to story decompression and some nondescript artwork. Focusing on a firefighter who has a deep, intimate connection with flames, you can probably guess Spurrier's main twist (if you haven't had it spoiled by the numerous interviews, anyway). Still, series protagonist Rosheen is an interesting character, and I love the level of detail that Spurrier gives when illustrating her top-to-bottom knowledge of flame, whether its describing a weak flame as "a fumbling backseat teenage necker," or knowing which materials burn and which explode. The artwork, however, is a little less memorable - Max Dunbar actually reminds me a bit of Stefano Caselli, but for a book that seems to be as moody as Slash & Burn, his style doesn't quite do the heavy lifting that Spurrier's obvious research has. This issue doesn't do a ton beyond just introducing the main character - there's little in the way of a greater mystery here - but now that that's been established, hopefully this series will start to heat up.
