Stories within stories have always been a staple of the Sandman-spinoff Vertigo books. On one hand you get the story of an all-powerful, mythical being like Dream or Lucifer; and on the other you get the real people that those beings effect. Holly Black and Lee Garbett have been delivering on this tradition in spades over these first three issues of Lucifer. They've been succeeding with emotional, relatable, and unique stories of regular people tempted by sin. But in some ways, those stories are beginning to do a disservice to Lucifer's plot - Lucifer and his murder investigation are becoming the least interesting elements of an individual issue. Worse, the multiple stories that are being told in the issues fail to flow together in immediately obvious ways making for some awkward cross-cutting. Lucifer #3 succeeds in both the stories it's telling, but fails to bring them together in a satisfying way. –Levi

There have been times when this mini-series seemed destined to tread the predictable, familiar path when it comes to stories of real-world schlubs gaining super-powers. But luckily, Eric Kripke and John Higgins seem intent on embracing the mature readers label and telling a story that manages to be both a hyper-violent romp and a glum character study in one. The saga of middle aged nobody-turned crusading hero Josh Jaffe becomes more compelling in this issue as Josh wrestles with his pill addiction and faces the fact that he's going to have to get his hands dirty in order to protect his family. It's also fun to see his impromptu partner Jessica take the spotlight in this issue, particularly in a hilarious sequence where Jessica's story plays out in the background while Josh fights to maintain his composure in the foreground. The series continues to benefit from John Higgins' detailed artwork, which is both refined and grimy in equal measure. It's a bit odd to see Marc Olivent suddenly step in on the final page, but that page is so surreal that the sudden switch-over might be intentional. -Jesse

What Sheriff of Babylon #4 lacks in comparison to last issue's big action, it makes up for in character moments and some unexpected storytelling choices . The book opens with a beautiful, surreal fairy tale telling of Saffiya's life and eventual marriage to The Prophet Muhammad. This is such a stark contrast to everything that's been done in this book before, and works beautifully following the shocking conclusion of last issue. The way Mitch Gerads draws and colors the sequence defines and defies the cinematic storytelling strengths of the rest of the book. The rest of the issue is wonderfully told, especially a scene involving Chris and a local child, and proves why this is still one of Vertigo's best offerings. –Levi

Unfollow has a great hook, to be sure, but it wouldn't be enough to support an ongoing series without a great cast of characters to give the conflict weight and meaning. That cast is something Rob Williams has been diligently working to build and flesh out over the course of these first five issues, and the payoff is already apparent. This issue wraps up the first major phase of the story, with the 140 lucky benefactors already reduced by two and everyone departing the island and returning to an uncertain future of vast wealth and unending paranoia. There's a despondent, uneasy quality to the story that Williams and artist Michael Dowling capture expertly. Dowling's inhuman, almost demonic portrayal of de facto villain Mr. Rubenstein is one of the more enjoyable elements of this issue. And if readers weren't already invested in the lives of David and his sister, they certainly will be by the final pages. -Jesse

Survivor's Club has so much going right for it, but none of it is able to come together enough to form a cohesive, good comic book. Ryan Kelly is a master of a comic book storytelling, and it turns out, a master of horror. His designs and creepy and frightening, evocative of the films they were inspired by but also fresh and new. The writers have also pulled together an interesting and diverse cast of characters that you want to root for. But when these disparate characters come together, they just can't form a whole. The stakes just keep getting too high, too quickly. Instead of feeling propulsive, the plot just feel overstuffed and messy. There's a good comic book here, but it's buried in an excess of horror elements. –Levi
