Vertigo: Progetti Futuri 2.0

After reading Clean Room #3 one thing is clear – you would not want to be trapped in the mind of Gail Simone. With each issue the writer finds new and inventive ways to get her readers reaching for their nightlights, and in issue #3 we get our first taste of what looks to be an ongoing nightmare. There are a lot of spooky seeds being planted here, and where the series' debut appeared all too eager to see them bloom, Simone is perfectly content to play the long game as of now. The initial deluge of information has slowed to a steady trickle, as Chloe's inciting incident has been largely passed over in lieu of bigger (and badder) things. Said structure makes some moves – such as the timely appearance of arm-spaghetti-maker Killian – read a bit convenient, but there's so much eerie intrigue that it hardly matters. Equally icky is the art by Jon Davis-Hunt. His pages have an appropriately clean, almost sterile look to them, which only enhances the disturbing nature of his various creepy crawlies. All told, issue #3 is Simone and Davis-Hunt at their unhinged best. -Jeff

Curiosissimo di leggere last gang in town

Having recently wrapped up FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics, writer Simon Oliver is back with a new Vertigo comic that follows the rise and fall and rise again of a punk rock group over the decades. Last Gang in Town certainly has the punk rock spirit working in its favor. This book is full of characters whose only ambitions in life are to raise a ruckus and rail against the system. There's a real passion and excitement to the writing that's undeniable. Artist Rufus Dayglow is the real star of the show. He delivers a style that's as much influenced by the underground comix movement as it is by more contemporary indie fare. It's somewhat cartoonish but also garish and gritty in all the right ways. Unfortunately, it's a little tough to connect with the characters and their mission in this issue. The way the script constantly jumps between time periods makes the story needlessly obtuse -Jesse
