The balance between real life drama and surreal science fiction reaches a new height in this quickly paced and fascinating chapter. This issue is a tour de force for Darwyn Cooke on art, as just about every manifestation of the supernatural is told solely through the art, rarely through the written text. These otherworldly occurrences are happening unbeknownst to the characters as they go about their lives, but are clear to the readers through Cooke's clear and concise storytelling. It's a structure as written by Gilbert Hernandez that is beautiful and intricate, and would have been completely confusing and jumbled with a lesser artist. Not to be lost in all this, is the compelling love triangle which just keeps getting more intricate in a way that only a Hernandez can do. This series is living up to the hype. –Levi

New Romancer is an unexpected read from Vertigo. The series follows bookworm Lexy Ryan's dream-come-true scenario of meeting reincarnated forms of her favorite Romantic authors. Though its literary influences bring up obvious comparisons to the publisher's past works like Fables and The Unwritten, New Romancer shares more in common with young adult fiction and cartoons than the usually grim publishing line. It's a bold move, but one that doesn't pay off as well as you might hope. Brett Parson's art turns this comic into a cartoon with beautiful, clean lines and simple but appealing figure work. Unfortunately, Peter Milligan uses those same cartoon conceits more as an excuse for plot and character shortcuts than anything else. This first issue rushes too quickly through its concept, not allowing any time for the readers or characters plausible time to adjust and making for an awkwardly paced and unsatisfying debut. –Levi
