Ms. Marvel #17 (Published by Marvel Comics, Review by Kat Calamia, 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):

Ms. Marvel #17 is a solid ending to one of the titles' best story arcs to date. The sense of community is a great strength for the series, and this concept truly shines in this issue. Ms. Marvel works with her online community and Jersey City to defeat the villainous internet troll Doc.X proving that, "Most [people] aren't awful. Most of them are just waiting for a chance to do the right thing." This idea is also showcased in the opening of the issue where the school reacts to Zoe's leaked messages to Nakia. There are a few people who use this to target Zoe, but after the students see Zoe hurting they come as a group to comfort her. Takeshi Miyazawa does a great job at bringing this community theme to life with his artwork. His pencils really shine during the high school and the gaming scenes with great focus on characters' facial expressions. This series is always at its strongest when utilizing its supporting cast, and this arc of Ms. Marvel does this in stride. The story seamlessly weaves a great commentary on technology, identity, and community, while also providing an interesting twist on the superhero secret identity trope.

Ms. Marvel #18 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 6 out of 10):

After an intense arc with villain Doc.X, Ms. Marvel shifts gears and focuses on supporting character Bruno Carrelli as he adjusts to school life in Wakanda. Ms. Marvel #18 sadly misses a lot of opportunities for a psychologically-driven story about living life with a disability. While one would think readers' reunion with Bruno would focus on his personal narrative more, G. Willow Wilson's script winds up getting sidetracked by its focus on its Wakandan setting, making Bruno's physical struggles post-Civil War II feel more like an afterthought. (It also simultaneously makes us wish Bruno's story could have been weaved through previous issues of the series, rather than dropping us into the deep end with one standalone issue.) Artist Francesco Gaston is a new contributor to Ms. Marvel, and with the help of recurring colorist Ian Herring, does a consistent job with the artwork for this one-shot story. His pencils match the expressive style of pervious artists on the series. Overall, Ms. Marvel #18 does a good job at giving an opportunity to explore one of Kamala's supporting characters, but with Bruno's emotional arc only touching the surface, the issue can't help but feeling a little bit like filler.

Ms. Marvel #19
Written by G. Willow Wilson
Art by Marco Failla and Ian Herring
Lettering by Joe Caramagna
?Published by Marvel Comics
?Review by Kat Calamia
?'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10

Ms. Marvel #19 starts a new arc for the series where G. Willow Wilson puts a focus on the community of Jersey City, and raises the stakes for Kamala Khan and her supporting cast. This is a solid issue that showcases the importance of Wilson's gradual character-building for the people of Jersey City.

The issue centers around Kamala spending time with her family and her Jersey City community as they celebrate the first day of Eid Al-Adha. But this celebration doesn't last for long as Wilson brings back Civil War II villain Lockdown to target unregistered superpowered residents. It's nice to see the return of a familiar face for this arc, as it makes this plot more personal for Kamala. In Civil War II, Lockdown started out as a thorn in Kamala's side, but Wilson and Marco Failla make her a more menacing villain for this issue.

Lockdown is not alone in this fight as she teams up with Discord, a masked villain who Ms. Marvel seems to think she knows, adding a nice mystery to the story. Failla's pencils are great in this scene as their battle showcases Kamala starting to master her powers for defensive tactics. You can see just from the facial expression how well Failla allows Kamala's confidence to seep through these panels.

The set-up for the villain storyline is a highlight for the issue, but the focus on Kamala's supporting characters is also a strength. Last arc put a spotlight on Kamala's high school friends, but with this issue we receive more interaction between Kamala and her family. The opener of this issue with the sacrifice of the goat for Eid Al-Adha showcases the strength of their interaction as Willow hits some great comedic beats between Kamala and her family. This scene shows the closeness of the family while also putting a nice focus on Kamala's heritage. This builds the tension for the issue's cliffhanger involving Kamala's brother.

Marco Failla is a new artist for Ms. Marvel, but is a wonderful fit for the series. Failla has some great clean line work, and puts a lot of expression into the characters' facial work. This is needed for a book that is so focused on the people and community of Jersey City. Ian Herring's colors continue to be a staple for this book, and his consistency make artist shake ups less jarring for the series.

Ms. Marvel continues to be one of Marvel's strongest series as G. Willow Wilson continues to plumb new depths with her fan-favorite heroine. With civilians and politics making Jersey City almost a character unto itself, Ms. Marvel #19 pushes Kamala on a personal level and tests her perseverance as a hero.

Ms. Marvel #20 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

Ms. Marvel is the premiere hero of Jersey City, but what happens when the community she loves doesn't want her? Ms. Marvel #20 continues to make things personal for Kamala with familiar foes Discord and Lockdown kidnapping Kamala's brother, Aamir. The story is a bit of slow burn, but does a nice job at giving more spotlight to Aamir, a character from Kamala's supporting cast who doesn't receive nearly enough panel time. But at its core, this current story arc "Mecca" is about the community of Jersey City, making this feel like a much more personal story for Kamala, utilizing the kidnapping of her brother, the hallucination of an old friend, and the mystery behind Discord's familiarity. Marco Faila pencils bring the needed energy for the issue through the book's artwork balancing a slower paced story. This issue doesn't have a lot of action, but Faila does a great job with the characters' facial expressions. Ms. Marvel #20 is a solid set-up issue for what's becoming a strong character-driven story arc.

Good art. Good writing. Good comics. While the majority of the Marvel Universe is dealing with Secret Empire, a huge event that is about fascism taking over America, turning concentration camps into reality, and indiscriminate chaos, Ms. Marvel - a series decidedly not tied-in to Secret Empire - is the one with the most to say about the realities of fascism in America. Secret Empire is a cartoon. Ms Marvel? It's something more. More than any other issue this one focuses on Ms. Marvel's brother, Aamir, who is swept up in the anti-powered sentiment swinging around. It's an almost point to point comparison to what is happening in modern-day America, and what better character to fight an Islamophobic, sexist jerk than Ms. Marvel? This arc - and this issue specifically - deals with the harm of anti-immigration policies, the empathy some minorities have to the conservative majorities, believing that one day they can live in peace, and perhaps most interestingly, this issue begins to explore what makes seemingly normal people fall into this darkness. The villain here is no Gein, no Dahmer, just a random high school kid who doesn't feel special, and doesn't feel like -- despite being blonde, white, tall, male, straight, cis, allo -- his life is easy or fair. Seeing a comic book series that deals with these issues without positing things as black and white, while still showing how harmful the actions of these "normal" people can be, is refreshing and, well, almost non-existent. Nonetheless, what they're doing is wrong and bad and Ms Marvel's going to put a stop to it. Because, c'mon, she's a hero. That's what she does. -Tara

Ms. Marvel #22 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 5 out of 10):

Ms. Marvel #22 opens up with Kamala in a slump as she realizes that people are starting to hate her - even her friends. Continuing from last issue, Josh and Kamala have a really interesting hero/villain dynamic, but their relationship is pushed to the side to focus more on Lockdown. Sadly, Lockdown isn't an interesting villain without Discord by her side, and is easily defeated by Kamala and the citizens of Jersey City. (It doesn't help that by the end she just comes off as a whiny girl who didn't get her way.) On the flip side, this issue also puts a spotlight on the Jersey City community members who want to help Ms. Marvel. This was a good concept to have, but was far too separate from Kamala's narrative as they didn't really get to interact with her directly. The artwork was a better element of the issue, Marco Failla's pencils have been very consistent throughout this arc. He does a good job at conveying an expressive mix of action and character moments with this issue. Ms. Marvel #22 was a bit of a letdown as the conclusion to an otherwise great arc. The issue focuses too much on Lockdown and the community, and not enough on the emotionally driven rivalry between Kamala and Josh.
