Given its election-themed story and pro-voting message, it's too bad this issue wasn't released a few weeks ago. Obviously, slightly inaccurate timing is just one of the unfortunate aspects of the comics business, but coming out after our real world election instead of before takes away some of the impact this book's clearly intended to have. That's not to suggest it would have had an influence on how things went back on November 8th, but G. Willow Wilson's script has a pretty obvious purpose that would have been better served by an earlier release. As it is, this issue feels a bit redundant, and its message comes across a bit heavy-handed at times. The saving grace is Mirko Andolfo's art, which serves as a fine substitute for Takeshi Miyazawa. There's not much in the way of compelling superhero action, but Andolfo's crisp lines present Kamala at her most heroic. - Joe

Ms. Marvel #13 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

There's something a little bit heartbreaking about Ms. Marvel #13, coming weeks after a decidedly non-progressive candidate won the U.S. presidential election. Taking the divisiveness of the election and boiling it down to Jersey City politics, Kamala Khan's can-do spirit and grass roots activism might feel like a balm for some readers, although I for one wish we could have seen artist Mirka Andolfo's beautiful splash page of Kamala holding an American flag a month ago. Coming so late after the election, G. Willow Wilson's story — which winds up ushering in a third-party candidate amidst the ruins of two crooked campaigns — feels a little like a false equivalence (not to mention a little too late with a great PSA about registering to vote), but for many readers, this is still going to be a Marvel book that you can't miss.

What started out as a game for Kamala Khan has quickly become Ms. Marvel's worst nightmare. The twisted sicko who's been using online games to troll folks has found a way to take control of people IRL. With the Doc.X Virus on the loose, can Ms. Marvel trust anyone?

Online trolls served as one of the big villains of the most recent season of South Park, and now they're plaguing Kamala Khan's world. It's a foe uniquely suited for this teenage, gaming-obsessed heroine, and one G. Willow Wilson and Takeshi Miyazawa are using to good effect so far. There's an element of silliness to Kamala's battle with an online nuisance turned real-life threat, but also a palpable danger as she grapples with an enemy that seems capable of tracking her every move and exposing her identity on a whim. And beneath all the superhero trappings, this arc also functions as a very grounded look at the dangers of stolen privacy and the pain of simple teenage loneliness. Miyazawa's art works whether the focus is on colorful superhero action or high school character drama. His style is sleek and expressive, yet the coloring gives the book a sense of weight and gravity that helps balance out the larger-than-life elements. -Jesse

Ms. Marvel #15
Written by G. Willow Wilson
Art by Takeshi Miyazawa and Ian Herring

Published by Marvel Comics
Review by Kat Calamia
'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10

"Some smart person said we all have three lives: a public life, a private life, and secret life. Which sounds nice, except... we live in a world without secrets."

Kamala Khan is a high schooler, an Inhuman, and a famous teen superhero known as Ms. Marvel. That means she's use to wearing many masks, keeping parts of her life secret. In Ms. Marvel #15, G. Willow Wilson tackles the use of metaphorical masks in the technological age, providing a clever, modern twist on the common secret identity superhero trope.

Ms. Marvel's latest villain is the worst type of person – an internet troll! This antagonist knows that Kamala is Ms. Marvel and has been attacking all different aspects of her life. Ms. Marvel #15 explores Kamala's internal struggle and paranoia as she feels the masks she's built are being slowly ripped off without her permission.

This issue opens up with Kamala at her high school, anxious that her peers know about her secret life. She feels like all eyes are on her but instead Clara, a girl from Kamala's class, is the actual center of attention when personal information from her phone are leaked out to the entire school. This shows that superheroes aren't the only people wearing masks, especially in high school.

The high school setting gives the opportunity for Wilson to showcase Kamala's supporting cast: Gabe, Zoe, Nakia, and Mike. It's always a pleasure to see these characters have panel time. It shows that Kamala has a life outside being Ms. Marvel. Adding these characters into the story heightens Kamala's feeling of isolation. Wilson uses inner monologue to overshadow Kamala's day-to-day high school life, showing how the troll is affecting her relationships with her friends and family. This was a great way to use Kamala's supporting characters, but I also think it's a missed opportunity not to dig deeper into the masks Kamala's friends wear. Instead of introducing new characters to explore this side of the plot, the story would have been stronger if Wilson used the supporting cast the readers are already familiar with.

G. Willow Wilson balances Kamala's superhero and secret identity life perfectly with her script, and Takeshi Miyazawa does the same with his artwork. His pencils shine the most during the issue's high school scenes showcasing the student's diverse personalities, and their use of technology in school. We see the kids on their phones in class and while they have lunch in the cafeteria. Each student uses their phones differently. Nakia seems to be open with her cell phone showing her text messages to her friends, and Zoe (who we know has been keeping her sexuality a secret) uses her phone as a shield. This excessive use of technology makes the internet troll even more menacing. Kamala is surrounded by technology! This is a villain she can never escape.

Ms. Marvel has always been great at reinventing the superhero genre, and this arc is no exception. The secret identity trope may feel overused to some readers, but this issue presents this old trope in a fresh, new way. Wilson uses technology to build the suspense of the villain's motives as the troll's attacks hit close to home, making this enigma even more menacing.

A VERY BRUNO ADVENTURE!
• Attending a prestigious science school has always been one of Bruno Carrelli's dreams--he just never thought he'd have to lose his best friend (and use of his left hand) to get there.
• And as much as he loves Wakanda, Bruno can't help but feel bitter toward Kamala (who's secretly a super hero) for the super shenanigans that forced him to leave home.
• But it seems that even when he's thousands of miles away from Ms. Marvel, adventure's never far behind this Jersey boy...

It's good to occasionally to pit superheroes against foes they can't simply bludgeon into submission. That's certainly the case with Kamala Khan's latest opponent, a sentient computer virus that's threatening to leak all sorts of private information online, including Kamala's secret identity. This makes for a fittingly topical villain, but one who still feels like a credible threat and not merely the antagonist of an after-school special. G. Willow Wilson and Takeshi Miyazawa work some very strong character drama into this chapter. There's plenty of good, awkward romantic drama among the supporting cast. Kamala herself wrestles with that familiar but ever-important dilemma - "Is maintaining my secret identity worth risking innocent lives?" Once again, it's clear that Kamala is the truest heir to the Spider-Man mantle in the contemporary Marvel U. -Jesse

Ms. Marvel #16 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Kat Calamia; 'Rama Rating: 10 out of 10):

Ms. Marvel #16 reminds readers that the series' supporting cast are more than background characters with an issue focusing on Doc.x, the ultimate internet troll, targeting Kamala's friends. Doc.x continues to make things personal as he threatens to expose Ms. Marvel's secret identity as well as expose her friend Zoe's sexuality to the school in the most embarrassing way possible. Ms. Marvel #16 does a great job at weaving Zoe and Kamala's narratives together, creating a fresh story about secret identities/masks in the technological age. This issue shows how much Zoe has grown as a character, showcasing her bravery as she decides to tell Nakia about her romantic feelings, thinking about Nakia's reputation before her own. This act of selflessness helps Kamala reevaluate her strategy against the internet troll and her approach she's been taking as a hero. Takeshi Miyazawa art style caters to this story perfectly. Miyazawa's pencils bring the emotions needed in this heavy issue, especially in the scene where Zoe expresses her feelings towards Nakia – the pencils highlight how difficult it was for Zoe to have this conversation. Overall Ms. Marvel #16 is one of the series' strongest issues to date, fleshing out Kamala's supporting cast while in the process creates a menacing villain for the arc.
