Clearly Marvel felt the "Ultimates" name was too valuable to simply retire, so it's been re-purposed for an entirely different kind of Avengers comic. This series should appeal to fans of Jonathan Hickman's recent Avengers run. It's more sci-fi flavored and focused on high-concept storytelling. The mission statement, after all, is "Ultimate solutions for ultimate problems." This issue scratches that itch, except in spots where the script gets bogged down by exposition. For instance, Ewing spends entirely too much time trying to induct ISO-8 (the MacGuffin mineral from Marvel's various mobile games) into the comic book universe. The cast, while seemingly every bit as random as those in the rest of Marvel's new Avengers comics, benefits from solid characterization. Kenneth Rocafort's style suits the grandiose, sci-fi-oriented tone, though his sketchy approach doesn't suit every scene. -Jesse

"We can't just be another Illuminati," remarks Dr. Adam Brashear, aka Blue Marvel, towards the end of this debut issue, and that was always going to be a danger with a title like this. It certainly plays on the same grand scale as Jonathan Hickman's Avengers, but the coming together of this unique group - also consisting of Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. America - takes a far more proactive approach to the Multiverse, a welcome positive note after the fatalistic few years that led up to Secret War. Writer Al Ewing is definitely dealing with some abstracts here, as well as pulling together some epic threads, but Kenneth Rocafort's art simultaneously grounds and elevates the story. He gives the cosmic grandness a sense of scale and tangibility, but some of his original constructs - such as a warlord's throne being used to maintain a "panopticon astral consciousness" - are simply mind-blowing. A difficult concept for a first issue, but so brimming with ideas and grace that it is hard not to be enveloped by it.

Serie che si preannuncia interessante, il primo numero mi ha colpito per le motivazioni del supergruppo. Di Ewing poi mi fido, unica pecca Rocafort che però non mi dispiace completamente qua.

Al Ewing's approach to the Ultimates is more similar to Brian Michael Bendis's Illuminati or Jonathan Hickman's Council of Reeds than Mark Millar's Ultimates. These aren't big screen, blockbuster fights. These are a group of the most cosmically powerful and intelligent heroes in the Marvel Universe who are trying to solve the biggest problems. Trying to solve everything. Their first big project is to find a solution to Galactus's hunger, and though the solution isn't going to come as easily as the group might have hoped, you have applaud the ambition. Kenneth Rocafort's out of this world style and cosmic leaning make him a great fit for the subject matter. This is a big book with big questions, and it just might be the heir apparent to Hickman's Marvel storytelling. –Levi
