"The downside of having such a great rogues gallery is that writers seem increasingly reluctant to invent new enemies for Daredevil. One of the many early successes of Charles Soule and Ron Garney's new Daredevil run is that they're building up a villain who shows strong potential to run with the greats. This issue is a proper showcase for Tenfingers, both in terms of the threat he poses to New York and the charisma he possesses that enables him to draw so many into his fold. Soule cleverly structures this issue in a way that draws parallels between Tenfingers' plot and Matt Murdock's attempts to bring him to justice. The coloring is key here, with Tenfingers' world shrouded in murky reds while Matt's courtroom drama is all cold blue. Ron Garney's striking design work and dynamic fight sequences are a terrific complement to Soule's writing. The scenes centered on Matt training his new protege, Blindspot are also a lot of fun to read, which further reinforces the idea that this book is at its best when it focuses on the new and different." -Jesse

In the first two issues, the creators put a big emphasis on making Daredevil feel new again. They introduced a new villain in Tenfingers, gave Matt a brand new job as a prosecutor, and even gave the book a fresh new visual look. It's only the third issue, but suddenly those changes aren't quite feeling new enough. Instead of doubling down on the interesting quirks of Tenfingers and his crew, we get a fairly standard run in with The Hand. Instead of showing us the ways in which being a prosecutor can give the plot a jolt, Matt is instead burdened with the threat of demotion. Even the gorgeous new visual style and color palette suffers slightly in combat as the impact of the bang of a gun or punch to the face is dulled somewhat within the red palette. These are mostly minor to medium complaints, but add up to an issue not as satisfying, or promising, as the first two. –Levi

Ninjas. Why does it always have to be ninjas? This month the Hand returns as Matt Murdock attempts to reason with Hell Kitchen's newest crime lord, Tenfingers. Writer Charles Soule keeps a firm hold on Matt's terse, but engaging inner narration as he, and his new protege Blindspot, meet the ninja cult head on to keep Tenfinger's thralls as safe as they can. "Nobody dies. Not in my city," Matt says as he scraps, and if that isn't Daredevil in a nutshell, I don't know what is. Artist Ron Garney along with colorist Matt Milla deliver energetic Frank Miller-esque visuals throughout as Daredevil's lithe, but powerful frame, tears through the wraith-like ninjas of the Hand. Milla's almost negative like approach to the colorizations also gives it a distinctly darker look, vastly different from the pop art style of the previous creative team. Everything that's old feels new again in Daredevil #3 as it takes inspiration from the Miller era and delivers yet another engaging take on the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
