Green Arrow (USA) di Ben Percy

Benjamin Percy has been doing some fascinating experiments in his run on Green Arrow - throwing any number of strange genres or tropes into a book where you wouldn't expect any experimentation. Often it fails, or more accurately - doesn't succeed - but even in failing or not succeeding it's one of the superhero books that will stay with you the longest in a given week. Green Arrow #48 is another one of those compelling stumbles, telling the story of Oliver Queen's descent into becoming werewolf (yes, you read that right) both as a low boil horror tale and as a real world parallel for things like performance-enhancing drugs. So much of the story is silly (made even sillier without the context of October's Green Arrow Annual #1), but it almost works due to Percy's poetic narrative style and his sheer ambition and determination. –Levi

Benjamin Percy has been walking this tightrope for ten issues now, teetering precariously between oddball brilliance and utter creative disaster. Despite that narrow divide, his issues have always wound up on the more positive end - as intriguing, laudable failures at their very worst. That's no longer the case with Green Arrow #49, as this issue winds up being a failure on just about every level. This latest issue of werewolf-Green Arrow doesn't work on either the horror or allegorical levels of past issues, in fact it feels devoid of any of the lofty ambition of Percy's usual work. The empty feeling story is unfortunately echoed in Szymon Kudranski's 3D-computer model looking art - the people look rubbery instead of real. Hopefully Percy has more up his sleeve for next month's big issue 50, because this chapter failed on all levels to live up to the recent standards of this book.–Levi
