The Omega Men #9 was something of a watershed point for the maxi-series. There's no turning back for Kyle Rayner as war breaks out in the Vega System and he's forced to join his fellow Omegas in a prolonged war. It's great to see Kyle front and center more than ever in this series, particularly now that he's reclaimed his White Lantern ring. But while there's a grand scope to this issue, writer Tom King treats it more as a war of attrition and a series of bloody, interchangeable battles that all lead from one to the next. The focus is very much on the soul-crushing horror of war rather than superhero spectacle. Unfortunately, the book's visual quality takes a significant dive at a critical time. Barnaby Bagenda's pencils seems noticeably looser and less refined in this chapter, to the point where readers can be forgiven for thinking another artist has come on board. Bagenda's methodical, grid-based page designs are still apparent, but his figures don't pack the same punch. The switch from usual colorist Romulo Fajardo to Hi-Fi causes the book to lose some of its haunting, ethereal quality. -Jesse

Omega Men #10 (Published by DC Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

Tom King has a great mastery of Kyle Rayner's voice as the Omega Men launch a desperate battle on the planet Karna, but there's something missing in this Omega Men #10 that makes all the fighting feel a little numbing. On the plus side, watching Kyle struggle with exhaustion as he controls the entire emotional spectrum is a great bit, and the ongoing theme that there are no heroes in war is still a good one - but beyond that, I feel like this particular isuse doesn't really build more on King's greater narrative beyond a long, ardruous fight. That said, artist Barnaby Bagenda still does some great work here within King's enormous panel counts, and Hi-Fi does an admirable job filling in for Romulo Fajardo, Jr. in keeping this book's trademark color scheme intact. Fans of this series will love the way King characterizes his antiheroes, but this issue probably won't win any new converts.

There's only one chapter of Omega Men remaining, a fact that is equally exciting and bittersweet. This penultimate issue sets up the finale nicely, exploring how each member of the team is faring in the war against the Citadel and how they prepare for the final battle to come. There's a strong sense of fatalistic doom driving this issue forward. Rather than focusing on the epic scope of the war, writer Tom King is more interested in exploring the futility and inevitability of war in general. This issue digs deeper into the tragic pasts and troubled minds of each character in turn, resulting in a well-balanced addition to the saga. And after the previous issue took a slight dip in visual quality, it bounces back here. Barnaby Bagenda's precise grid layouts are as clean and attractive as ever, and Romulo Fajardo's moody colors help channel that combined sense of epic spectacle and mounting dread. -Jesse

DC deserves so many thanks for reconsidering cancelling this little-selling but beloved book. Tom King and Barnaby Bagenda got a chance to fully tell their story and, let me tell you, it's one incredible ending. The Omega Men are on the cusp of victory and the only question left to answer is whether the team learned more from Kyle Rayner, or Kyle from them. And in perfect Omega Men fashion, the answer is more gray than the question. Additionally, all of the characters get their own sendoffs in a really clever, TV series finale style ending. The cherry on top is the wonderful, haunting final page to give this great series the finale it deserved. -Levi

We are called Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak. Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced. Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed. Weaknesses like... emotions, pain. You will become like us. You will be upgraded.

:ahsisi:
