The breakup of Aquaman and Mera has been one of the more heartbreaking DC You changes. This issue attempts to take a look at their shattered relationship and the love that still remains. The problem is the recent revelation that Mera isn't exactly herself. This lends an air of pointlessness to the character interaction and slows down the general pace of the book. Distressingly, it also brings an unnecessary element of rape into the story once their relationship gets physical. I say "unnecessary" because there's no sign that the book will actually explore the implications of that encounter. The result is an issue that somehow feels dull and upsetting at the same time. Nor does the art help much. Alec Morgan's layouts are finished by Art Thibert and Jesus Merino, and rather than lend some consistency to the pages it only makes the issue look like it was drawn by two completely different artists. -Jesse

Aquaman #44 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Pierce Lydon; 'Rama Rating: 5 out of 10):

No one can ever figure out what to do with Aquaman. Cullen Bunn's overarching plot is ripped straight from the Mortal Kombat films and this issue sees Arthur Curry still struggling with regaining control of his kingdom. Bunn throws a little switcheroo in the plotting but considering that the lead up is a bit gratuitous, the moment feels like it could have been better executed. Artists Alec Morgan, Jesus Merino and Art Thibert do their best with this issue and I like how they render hair in water but there's not much going on. This is a talky book through and through that serves to get to the next story while not offering much in the way of meaningful character development. It's far from the worst book you'll read this week but it definitely won't inspire anyone to really dive into the hero of Atlantis.

Following his almost-but-not-quite reunion with Mera last month, Aquaman now finds himself a stranger in a strange land. But what could have been the basis for a fun, adventure-driven storyline instead evolves into a dull, plodding, and mostly uneventful new issue. Much of the script involves Aquman exploring alone and either monologuing or talking aloud to himself. Even when a new group of characters enters the picture, the language gap ensures that Aquaman still spends his time talking to himself and trying to parse out the intentions of his potential new allies. In the end, very little seems to have been accomplished through all this aimless dialogue and exposition. The new setting at least suits the dark, surreal tone of Trveor McCarthy's art, with the caveat that the multiple inkers prevent the issue from maintaining a completely cohesive look. This series could use a change in pace or focus, but this issue didn't deliver in that regard. -Jesse

Parli di Maelstrom (Se si scrive cosi non ricordo)? Nel topic ITA su questo arc ci sono stati tutti commenti positivi, tutto quello che viene prima sono d'accordo è pessimo (tranne le sequenze dedicate a Mera).
