Batman Beyond (USA) di Dan Jurgens & Bernard Chang

It's foundation set, Batman Beyond attempts to kick into second gear with an action packed third issue. While it succeeds in further establishing Tim Drake as the Batman of the future, the issue feels like a paint-by-numbers romp, filled with odd motivational swerves and more than a little expositional banter. Dan Jurgens does what he can to add depth to his titular lead, Tim's own uncertainty giving way to assured conviction. The problem is, it's tough to really care yet about much anyone else, the various dangers not feeling nearly as impactful as they aim to be. The art proves the lone highlight, Bernard Chang utilizing a number of large, sweeping panels that ably reflect the book's escalating danger and scope. Even then, Marcelo Maiolo's usually strong color work feels off, his continued usage of stark color breakups at times tonally out of place. Batman Beyond still very much feels like a read that hasn't entirely found its footing, and it's any wonder what kind of book we'll be left with when it does. -Jeff

Three issues in, and Batman Beyond is in a much stronger place than when it started. Whilst the premise initially seemed too rickety a foundation to build a solid book on, writer Dan Jurgens and penciller Bernard Chang have been working overtime to make "Tim Drake: Batman of the Future" into a compelling title. Jurgens clearly had fun here playing out a worst-case scenario for his Skynet-meets-Orwell dystopia of thought-control and vicious robots. Likewise, Chang commands attention with a duo of eye-catching double-page spreads that still manage to facilitate story, justifying them a lot more legitimately than if they were pure eye-candy. Colorist Marcelo Maiolo continues his unique, visceral approach by simplifying his palette down to almost cel-shaded reds, yellows and white to give a shock of pure light to Chang's hard-hitting panels. With #3, Batman Beyond is quickly turning from poorly conceived oddity to a stunning and distinctive comic book.

The fact that Tim Drake is the star of this series is only one reason why it's a very different Batman Beyond from the ones that have come before. As much as I wanted to leave everything connected to The New 52: Futures End in the past, this series does have its appeal as it chronicles the ongoing battle between Tim and Brother Eye. There's a real sense of scope and drama to the conflict. Artist Bernard Chang deserves plenty of credit. His Batman is always in motion as he dodges explosions and battles creepy cyborgs, and this post-apocalyptic Gotham is brought to life in stunning detail. For his part, Dan Jurgens is building a stronger emotional core to the conflict by emphasizing the relationship between Tim and Barbara Gordon and building an interesting link to the rest of the bat-franchise. -Jesse

Invasion! Dan Jurgens and Bernard Chang's dystopic tale of Tim Drake in a far-flung, Brother Eye-controlled future continues with Batman Beyond #4. Chang's artwork is as stylish as ever, whilst Jurgens' Gotham descends into full-blown war. Alongside the Atom's successor Micron, Tim Drake fights valiantly to uphold Tim McGinnis' legacy as Batman. This is an action-packed issue, playing to all of dynamic penciller Bernard Chang's strengths. Filled with villains like the maniacally stupid Jokerz gang, Jurgens clearly had fun whipping up a worst-case scenario for a Tim Drake who still has self-doubt about taking up the mantle of the Bat. Narratively, #4 is the beginning of the end for Batman Beyond's first arc, and so Jurgens' concentrates on establishing Tim as a worthy Batman to a Gotham that doesn't yet fully trust in him. All in all, this is a top-notch slice of blockbuster superheroics.
