Star Wars #9 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Richard Gray; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

For a series set between two superstar films, Jason Aaron's Star Wars has never ceased to surprise. The notion of Jedi relics becoming cosmic collectors' items is a stroke of simple genius, as is the vision of a Hutt wearing a necklace of lightsabers. Rather than simply filling the void with incongruous stories, Aaron is expanding the universe in a way that is driven by pure, unadulterated fandom. Stuart Immonen's world is authentic, depicting a much darker side to the bright cities we saw in the prequel films, with a secondary plot involving Han and Leia (and Han's alleged wife) providing the levity and a chance geek out over some familiar cameos. This isn't just a tie-in: this is Star Wars told in deceptively still frames.

Jason Aaron keeps the plot of Star Wars moving at a bristling pace -- tossing in unexpected twists and turns at regular intervals -- while Stuart Immonen uses his smooth, energetic style to make strange aliens and TIE Fighters more beautiful than they have any right to be. The three concurrent plot lines fill this issue with plenty of humor and action, although C-3PO seems a tad out of character as he and Chewbacca rough some people up to get information. The desire to shout "Hey, that shouldn't happen!" might come over you when Luke Skywalker gets some unexpected lightsaber training, simply because we're so used to the idea that he learned everything from Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, but it does make sense that he'd need to get some legit experience if he's going to be as good with that laser sword as he is in the next two movies. And if Aaron and Immonen add one thing to Star Wars lore, it's a Gungan who actually looks pretty cool and doesn't outstay his welcome.
