This latest chapter of the Savage Dawn crossover sees Wonder Woman bring a mortally wounded Superman to her fellow gods to be healed. Much of the issue focuses on Clark's spiritual journey as he's put through one gauntlet after another by the likes of Eros, Artemis and Strife. It's a neat idea, and one that allows Pete Tomasi to re-examine the core struggles Clark has faced ever since losing his powers and secret identity. The decision to render the hero as a slowly evolving fusion of Kal-El and Clark Kent is a clever touch. Unfortunately, each gauntlet on its own is too brief to truly dig into the character's psychology or allow him to properly prove his worth to the gods. There's also the problem that Doug Mahnke's pencils are inked by several artists, meaning that his bold, detailed line-work varies quite a bit in quality from one sequence to the next. This issue winds up frustrating as often as it entertains. -Jesse

Peter J. Tomasi has long been a quietly consistent force in the DC stable of talent. With Superman/Wonder Woman #25, he kind of short-changes Wonder Woman but in the process he gives us a Superman story that cuts to the heart of the character. Diana wants the gods to save Clark's life but he must prove himself worthy. And through their trials and temptations, we see the essential parts of Superman and a reminder of why so many people like this character in the first place. Doug Mahnke contributes some excellent artwork to the cause. The designs for the gods are well-formed and he guides us through the books with ease despite seemingly random transitions and costume changes. Thankfully, he stays in his lane with his character expressions and we don't get any out of character looks from any of the cast. All in all, this is a solid issue that might be overlooked considering its lack of relevance to the DCU at large, but it's a reminder that you don't have to do too much to make Superman a compelling character.

Superman/Wonder Woman #26 is an interesting flip-side to the problems and strengths seen in the following chapter of Superman #49. Whereas Superman #49's art doesn't do the grand storytelling justice, the opposite can be said about Superman/Wonder Woman #26. Doug Mahnke absolutely delivers on every panel of this chapter. The sheer visual scale of the action, teamed with the emotional punch on every face, makes this chapter feel epic. But the storytelling just doesn't fit that same bill. Superman and Wonder Woman are left to fight some more of Vandal Savage's basically nameless and faceless cannon fodder. Meanwhile, Savage himself is enacting a plan that is always presented as inevitable. The writing's stakes don't quite match that of the art. –Levi
