Teen Titans #6 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Michael Moccio; 'Rama Rating: 7 out of 10):

If there's one thing better than seeing this new Power Girl in action, it's seeing her get along so well with Wonder Girl, and that the primary focus is on the positives of their budding friendship. It's girl power to the max at its best. Despite Scott Hepburn's sometimes awkward line art that overexaggerates facial expressions, it ultimately works with colorist Dan Brown to make visually dynamic spreads throughout the entire issue. Writer Will Pfeifer is able to balance between all the characters very well – it's just sometimes hard to feel like the story finds its footing when it bumps around to different plot points after every few pages, as the scenes are almost too short. Overall, there's a lot of potential in this new budding Teen Titans team, and hopefully the new Power Girl is here to stay because she adds a whole new element of reality to the inexperienced super team.

So much is going on in Teen Titans and yet it's hard to find a reason to really feel invested in these characters. It feels like writer Will Pfeifer is focusing way too much on the idea of the plot - going bigger and bigger with time travel and almost apocalyptic events happening - and not enough on the characters. They don't feel like real heroes during this issue; Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Bunker, Beast Boy, and Raven all just feel like they're going through the motions. The dialogue and exposition detracted from the momentum of the issue, which made going from page to page feel languid. This is a shame, too, because Kenneth Rocafort's pencils remain one of the highlights of the Teen Titans book, since Rocafort makes everyone look so cool.

Though technically in a new arc, Teen Titans #8 feels same old same old both in content and execution. Will Pfiefer continues to explore the team's standing with their not-so-newfound celebrity, focusing on how the uptick in status affects each Titan individually. Such setup is amusing enough, Pfiefer ably illustrating both sides of the popularity coin, but the issue is so spread out that none of the unique instances really pop. Gar's scenes come the closest (who wouldn't watch that episode of SNL?), but by and large issue #8 feels like a very long segue into the real meat of the arc. Likewise, artist Kenneth Rocafort turns in a solid if unspectacular issue, his design work strong but never completely engaging. His pages with Gar are loaded with personality, so much so that the rest of the issue falls flat by comparison. Add in the fact that Manchester Black continues to disappoint as one of the Titans more transparent and uninteresting foils, and you have another so-so installment. -Jeff

Rather than read like a true annual, Teen Titans Annual #1 serves as more of an over-sized continuation of the book's current arc. This works as both a boon and a hindrance. The extra page count allows for further fleshing out of Superboy's return, but also leads to some noticeable lulls in the book's ongoing narrative. Writers Tom King and Will Pfeifer expand on the book's current celebrity focus, showing how the increased spotlight and shifting team dynamics affect Titans old and new alike. The best parts of the book revolve around the contrasting viewpoints of these two classes, but unfortunately these moments are few in a book loaded with Martian melees and drawn-out drama. The pencils provided by Allison Borges and Wes St. Claire go a long way in circumventing these issues, their pages strong, if not entirely cohesive. Though the annual itself comes off as a bit wanting, the issue's final pages do serve in giving the book something it's sorely needed -- a direction. -Jeff
