This series hit a rough patch during the course of Forever Evil, and it's never really recovered that lost momentum. The conflict in "The Amber of the Moment" just doesn't hit with the emotional resonance it needs. Part of that blame falls on the villain, who comes across merely as one more posturing, all-powerful foe for the team to contend with. Her overwrought narration doesn't help this issue one bit. But this issue also suffers when it comes to exploring the emotional suffering of the various team members. Visually, the dull framing choices and lackluster facial work do nothing to inject more emotion into the story. This arc just isn't engaging anymore, and with only one issue left before Justice League dark wraps up, there's little hope of anything changing for the better. -Jesse

I wish I could say I'm sorry to see this series ending as DC's preps their big relaunch, but it's been a while since Justice League Dark has ranked among DC's more memorable titles. The current arc basically limps to a finish here, with no real sense of danger or excitement despite the conflict involving the entire universe being consumed by the void. Prayala isn't a very compelling villain, and she's dealt with almost like an afterthought in this issue. It doesn't help that the dull, lifeless art does little to bring all this cosmic spectacle to life. Writer J.M. DeMatteis does find some emotional appeal in exploring the doomed romance between Constantine and Zatanna one last time. It's interesting that this issue revolves less around the two characters themselves than their artificial copies - two constructs who nonetheless find the connection their real selves have lost. So it's not a total wash in this finale issue, but the team could definitely sue a break for now. -Jesse
