DC Relaunch: Batman Odyssey #1 By Neal Adams



Batman Odyssey will be returning in October with a new volume and a new number one. And creator Neal Adams wants everyone to know it.

    What the heck is happening with Batman Odyssey?

    DC tells us the solicitations have begun for the last 7 monthly issues.

    Your stores have not been reacting to your enthusiasm, but rather, they have been reacting to the internet chatter. Chatter that I.... perhaps should have responded to.

    Now it's all verblunget and you guys are the ones who are losing out, and I am sorry.

    The continuing series is just great! It's exciting and dramatic with neanderthals, evolved dinosaurs, magicians, war, death, gnomes, trolls and tests, the like of which Batman, the modern Ulysses has never faced in his life... all happening in a real underworld.

    The multiple climaxes are killer. But if you care.... Man, I hate to say this... you've got to hoc your stores like bloody hell to get these issues.

    My promise to you is to give you the best, most exciting comic books ever. I've never failed you, and I never will. But this time, you've got to dig in and demand your stores get this. The best Batman series ever.

    A note: You notice Marvel is actually promoting my work for them? Avengers and the "Secret Project?" You'll notice Dark Horse is promoting Blood? Well, for some reason, DC isn't promoting "Batman Odyssey."

    So.... it's up to you and me, guys and gals.

Ten Questions To Answer About Batman: Odyssey by Neal Adams



We're half way through Neal Adams thirteen issue maxi-series Batman: Odyssey. And much prominent internet reaction has been... well, there's been a bit of mocking.

    Laura: We open on Bruce Wayne, who looks faintly like Chace Crawford of Gossip Girl, expositing the hell out of what he is doing in copious word balloons. First question: Who is he talking to?

    David: It's unclear, but it seems Shirtless Batman is talking to the reader. Every issue opens this way, and it literally gets sexier every single time. It is as if the reader just had a one night stand with Bruce Wayne and wakes up to him telling a story on a monthly basis. 12 issues, 12 Sexy Nights with Bruce.

Gotham Inc

    "I can't really tell you what this book is about since I really have no clue, at all, but it's completely out of character for Batman and Ra's Al Ghul is responsible for everything. That's all you need to know about this book."

Trouble Thinking

    "I cannot encapsulate it, because nothing makes sense in any context whatsoever. Fights occur in the background for no reason, with no impact on any character or reaction from anyone in the room. The two combatants, bloodied and broken on the ground, will occasionally pipe in with expository dialogue about an overarching plot that is opaque to the point of parody."

Neal Adams however has been outspoken in return, claiming the retailers have been reducing orders due to this kind of commentary, rather than due to reduced sales. He replied to one concerned reader

    "I can only hope you will read the whole 13 issues and agree that I have brought us all to the next step up. If I have, all of comics is going to get much more interesting. I'll tell you this, every single point will pay off, even if you didn't understand why I did it at first. Who killed Deadman? How? Who killed Robin's parents? How?"

Those are questions. But why stop there? Here are ten questions that may increase your enjoyment of Batman: Odyssey as we await the beginning of the second volume in October...

    1. Who is (Bruce) talking to and why?

    Clue: It's not the reader. It's a specific character in the DC Universe. And it's not a woman. Even Bruce isn't so uncouth that he'd go shirtless during such an interview.

    2. If Ra's Al Ghul and Bruce's father were business associates... what was that business? And why did they sever their relationship? How does it relate to that car-among-the-dinosaurs?

    3. All the way back when Ra's figured out Batman's identity... did he really "figure out his identity?"

    Clue: Would anyone in his right mind suspect that a costumed crime-fighter named Batman would actually have a batcave?

    4. How did Man Bat discover Batman's identity?

    5. Clearly Bat-Man is a true neanderthal,... but what is Primus?

    6. Did the Sensei place Reuben Irons in the place of Riddler to kill that little girl? If not, why not?

    7. Did Batman intend to kill Reuben Irons and would he have if the little girl died?

    8. Has Batman been manipulated his whole career to waste his time battling "clowns" while the real crimes pass by him unnoticed?

    9. Where is the "underworld?"

    10. How can Batman stop the Sensei and a thousand assassins from killing Ra's, Talia and himself...

Parting Shot: 'Batman: Odyssey' to Return in October with Vol. 2, ComicsAlliance Rejoices



With the release of the new DC Comics solicitations for their October books and products, we've discovered something wonderful among the many relaunched titles and associated merchandise: Confirmation that Batman: Odyssey, the mind-bending, linear narrative-defying, brilliantly insane comic written and illustrated by Neal Adams is going to continue. And we could not be more overjoyed.

To be absolutely clear, we are not kidding.

As we made abundantly plain in our epic deconstruction of the first 6 issues, we love this series, and are genuinely very excited for all the absurd and unimaginable wonders we hope and this book will have in store. Remember to pre-order from your retailer if you feel the same way, because if the book ends before Neal Adams's dream is fully realized, we will all be the poorer for it.

This leaves me with so many questions: When Batman brings time to a standstill does he mean time in the story Bruce Wayne begins telling at the beginning of the comic, or time in the story Bruce then tells about himself, or time in the story Bruce tells about himself telling a story about himself?

We're also told that Batman must "be or be killed." We've already seen him violating some of the sacrosanct tenets of his character in Odyssey by not only wielding a gun but shooting it at random bystanders, so will we see Batman finally kill someone, the way he tried so very hard to kill Panamanian superstar Ruben Blade during an explicable acid trip in issue #4, only to deny it later?

Most of all where will the Odyssey take him? Only time will tell! Unless he stops it. Perhaps like that girl from the '80s TV show Out of the World, a development that I think is fully possible. As David Wolkin, my Odyssey co-annotator explained:

    As a reader and lover of comics and a guy who occasionally writes about them, the absence of Batman: Odyssey in my life over the past few months has left a void in my heart... I don't know if it is possible to explain to you in words the joy that I felt when Laura Hudson informed me that Batman: Odyssey Volume 2 was being solicited. I cannot express this feeling in words because these words do not yet exist. These feelings can only be expressed in images, images drawn by the hands of Neal Adams. It also mentioned that it will ship with a second cover, which we dearly hope is the cover that had originally been slated for the next issue in the series, back when it was called Batman: Odyssey #9, where terrifying, Medusa-haired Troll dolls attack five increasingly opaque versions of Batman with cutlery:
