Two stories in one! Batman Beyond is back as well as Justice League Beyond. Plenty of "Beyond" fun and excitement inside.
Batman Beyond is back. So is Justice League Beyond. If you've been missing the Beyond future of the DC Universe, this book should satisfy your needs.

The Good
Batman Beyond was a great animated series. When Adam Beechen brought back Terry and Bruce in the 2010 miniseries, we saw some things we hadn't seen before. There was some darkness along with loose ties to the current Bat-universe. This was followed by the 2011 series that lasted eight issues before FLASHPOINT and THE NEW 52 put it on hold. Beechen is back, right where he left off with legendary BATMAN artist Norm Breyfogle and I couldn't be happier.

Throughout the story, there are little mentions and nods to elements from the TV series in both stories that make you feel the creative team truly respects the original source material. There's also the continuing plot line with Max as well as Dana's brother, Doug, that we saw in the last series.

The first story deals with Batman (Terry) and a growing threat of Jokerz turning up in Gotham with a mysterious person in control of them. The second story is the Justice League and is by Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen. We get Terry with the League as well as Superman and some other familiar faces. As we see Terry get used being part of the League, we're seeing new developments that will obviously come into play in later issues.

We get a great mix of art. Seeing Breyfogle's take on Terry, Bruce, Dana, Max, etc was a treat. The same goes for Nguyen and Fridolfs on the Justice League story. For those two, it feels like it's been too long since we saw their art on STREETS OF GOTHAM.

The Bad
As much as I dug the art, I did have some minor issues. When Terry is dressed as Batman, he looks so badass. The art is very clean and almost has the same feel as the animated series. There were some moments when Terry, unmasked, didn't look as I remembered him. Some of the facial features felt off. But why nitpick? It should be about artist interpretation.

As much as I love Dustin's art, I had a couple minor issues with it as well on some characters. Superman didn't look...noble or strong enough. Other than that, it was great seeing all the characters again.

The Batman Beyond story is off to a nice start but I can see it easily going into a clichéd direction. I wouldn't think Beechen would go there so we'll have to wait and see. As for the Justice League story, I really want to know more about some of the characters. I feel like we don't know a lot about Barda or Kai-Ro. Hopefully we'll see more development in the coming months.

The Verdict
This is an oversized issue full of Beyond goodness. These days, $3.99 for 48 pages is a great deal. There is a Batman Beyond story by series regular Adam Beechen and art by Norm Breyfogle. There is also a Justice League Beyond story written and drawn by Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen. Both stories pick up where last year's BATMAN BEYOND story left off. There is plenty of ties to the animated series that shows the creative team knows what they're doing. While there is a ton of great art, there were a couple moments with some characters feeling a little off. Both stories are setting up plots for future stories and there is plenty of fun and excitement inside.

Today marks the release of BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1. We asked series editor Ben Abernathy to talk a little bit about the series and tease what readers can expect from its inaugural print issue. Here's what he had to say:

Returning writer Adam Beechen is joined by legendary Batman artist Norm Breyfogle to kick off some major new developments in the life of Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future. In this first storyline, the once disorganized Jokerz are attacking in greater numbers than ever and seem to be getting more organized. Who's behind this apparent effort to unite this chaotic band of anarchists? Meanwhile, ominous new developments are unfolding in Terry's personal life. There's trouble at home for Terry's girlfriend, Dana, whose brother Doug looks to be heading down a path of destruction.

And in the opening chapter of Justice League Beyond, writers/artists Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs have crafted a galaxy-spanning adventure that begins shortly after Batman's joining the League! I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed Batman Beyond Unlimited . Never really being a big fan of the television show when it was on, I went into this book just seeing if it passed the very low bar for comics based on the animated TV show. What I found was a book that was able to stand on its own as a comic title and separated itself from the show enough to feel like an addition to the franchise instead of filler on the racks.

Batman Beyond ended its three-season run over a decade ago, so there is no argument that this comic is just rack filler for a TV show a network is trying to promote. More accurately, it seems like Batman Beyond is a fan-favorite and those 10-year-olds who loved the show are now entering their twenties and entering their local comic shops. That's a good thing, too, as this comic definitely picks up where the show left off in terms of tone. With an excellently paced set of stories, Beechen, Fridolfs, and Nguyen do an excellent job in capturing the relationships between Terry McGuiness and Bruce Wayne. There is a sort of mutual respect at this point in their career together instead of the butting heads we saw at the beginning of the series. One of the highlights of the book is the second story in this giant-sized issue, which features members of the Justice League Beyond. It was interesting to see where the show's writers were talking this future plotline and away from the standard DCU. What the writers of the comic accomplish is fleshing out the relationship of these new heroes without relying on what came before them in the comic world.

That said, the language, although true to the show, was a bit grating. It seems like a cliché science-fiction troupe to replace swear words with things that somewhat resemble their original incarnation. (For example, it's a little awkward having Batman saying "blippin' kidding me" on the very first page.) Furthermore, I don't know if the best way to kick off a new Batman title is to have him smiling and holding his face in embarrassment on the very first page. It sets a tone that feels really uncomfortable for a Batman, even one based on a popular Saturday morning cartoon.

What I found to be the best surprise of the entire book was the artwork. In the past, comics that are tied-in with animated series have sometimes come off as stiff and uninspired in terms of the artwork. In other words, they didn't separate itself enough from the look of the show and ends up looking like rendered still images composed into a comic narrative. Batman Beyond Unlimited does not suffer from this. Sure, it has its moments where the characters appear to be a little stiff but this comes from their original designs being for TV and not comics. However, I was very impressed with the work of the art team (Breyfogle, Elder, Nguyen, Fridolfs, and Mayor) what they were able to bring to the book. There is a panel early on with an intense Bruce Wayne getting ready for action that really struck me. The hash marks and age lines looked great but were able to add on to what was already there from the original character design.

Although it looks as if the art team is trying to stay as close to the look of the show as they can, I don't think it would hurt to venture off the beaten path a little more and get experimental with the tone and looks of the characters. Like the story itself, the pacing of the artwork was well-timed and executed. It kept the pace of a comic instead of a TV show and never felt heavy-handed in its introduction to elements of this unfamiliar world. Although it stands apart from the other Batbooks on the shelf because of its origins in TV, Batman Beyond Unlimited can certainly stand on its own. I can see this book really becoming a fan-favorite, and it is an excellent introduction for new readers who were Bat-fans from their childhood.

Published just last week, BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1 sold out almost immediately and is already going back to press for its second printing. A print periodical collecting the digital first releases of BATMAN BEYOND and JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND, BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1 features stories written by Adam Beechen, Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen, and art by Norm Breyfogle, Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs.

The second printing of BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1 will be available in comic book stores on April 4, 2012.
