Stop us if you've heard this before, but Death Be Damned tells the story of a woman who narrowly survives an attack that took the lives of her husband and child, before embarking on a quest for revenge against those who were responsible. And then it doesn't. Ben Acker, Ben Blacker and Andrew Miller have added an extra layer to that premise which implies that something supernatural or otherworldly is going on. It's too early to say how successful that twist will be in the long run, but it creates a memorable surprise in this issue. The unnamed leading lady in this book is a little thin in her characterization, and the script seems more concerned about fleshing out the role of Darien Murray, the local undertaker with some disturbing ideas about what his job really entails. Whether the book is really about Darien remains to be seen. Unfortunately, Hannah Christenson's minimalistic art style hurts this issue, and her figure work just isn't very strong. It feels as if her artwork was still in its unfinished stages when the book was published. There are some intriguing ideas at play here, but the artwork simply doesn't hold up its end of the bargain. -Blair
