What It Is: Dr. Brownfield believes that a series of cataclysmic events are coming to New York City, and someone has to keep the city safe after he's gone. Enter Heller Wilson, a brilliant mathematics student, who discovers that his ailing, perhaps insane, mentor has been saving New York City from societal collapse by a series of "adjustments," a la the Butterfly Effect. But now, all signs point toward an impending disaster. Can Wilson take what little he's learned and save the city in time?

Having missed out on the original graphic novel version of Strange Attractors, this serialized re-release seemed like the perfect opportunity to rectify that mistake. And issue #1 doesn't disappoint. Charles Soule offers a captivating look at a city where numerous complex systems are held together by the delicate web of complexity theory, a city that would spiral into chaos if not for the efforts of a few brilliant mathematicians who know just how to keep that web functioning. It's a terrific high concept that Soule is able to introduce naturally over the course of this first issue without relying too heavily on bland exposition or impenetrable math terms. Unfortunately, the art doesn't quite match up to the writing. Greg Scott's figure work is stiff and his pages generally too murky and scratchy to bring much life to the story. Soo Lee's art in the backup tale (which is unique to this reprint) is far more elegant and expressive. -Jesse
