Aquaman meets with his brother, the king of Atlantis, to see if the Atlantians are planning on invading the surface world.
The Good
Arthur meets up with his brother, Orm and tries to find out whether or not Atlantis may be planning an attack on the surface world. In addition, Black Manta gets an offer to go onto to bigger things.

I've been an Aquaman for quite some time and I've always found Orm, Aquaman's brother, kind of lame and completely non-threatening. All that changes here. I found myself falling in love with this character. He's not the same Ocean Master as we've seen in previous books. He's actually cool, collected, and friendly. However, the Aquaman fanboy inside of me knows trouble is brewing. Now, Orm hides in the shadows for the whole issue, so we don't get a good look at the redesign of the character, aside from the picture of him on the cover. However, that doesn't matter because we learn so much about who he is and what type of man he is from the dialogue alone. As for the threatening side of things, we don't see any of that here, but by just the way Orm carries himself, you can tell he's confident in his own abilities, which, to me, is the scariest thing about a man with that much power.

I loved the scenes between Arthur and Orm in this issue. Geoff Johns' writing was fantastic here, and he does some great things with just the dialogue. The overall issue gives us a deeper look into the world of where Arthur's family originated from and the ties he still has to that world. It's purely epic. This is one of my favorite scenes in this series thus far.

Fantastic scene featuring Black Manta here, where we get a little more into the mind of this mad man. While he may be ruthless and a bit crazy, it's only when it comes to dealing with Aquaman. His mind is really set on either killing Aquaman or die trying to kill him. The few pages we see Black Manta really elevate the depth of this character here.

Overall, this is just such a fantastically paced issue. It has a great flow to it, and nothing feels clunky or slow. It's one of the few times I've read an issue more than three times in a sitting. It's brilliant from front to back.

The last two pages of this issue are so awesome and epic. If I say anything more, I will spoil it, so it's time for me to stop typing.

Every time I see Aquaman use his telepathic powers and "Vuu Vuu Vuu" pops up on the comic page, I get a big dumb smile on my face because I know exactly what that sounds like.

UPDATE: Apparently, my love for everything about this story was so great that I forgot to mention the art completely. Pete Woods and Pere Perez (pencils), Tony Avina (colors), and a whole giant host of inkers worked on this book together. There's a few scenes that particularly stand out in this issue, and one of them is Aquaman sitting down and looking at a shipwreck. It's hard to make an underwater scene look like an underwater scene, but it felt like this art team did a pretty good job and portraying that with little things like flowing plant life, sand being kicked up by footsteps, and hair flowing in the water. Would I rather have Ivan Reis back on this book? Yes, but I felt this team did well on this issue.

The Bad
I was enthralled by this issue. I have no problems with it.

The Verdict
Not only has Geoff Johns completely turned around Aquaman, but he's also made his villains real, developed characters, and not just some cardboard cutout baddies like they used to be. While the focus is mainly on Orm and Arthur discussing all things surface world vs Atlantis, it's the most interesting read in this series yet. It's frightfully brilliant in every way.

The build-up to the Throne of Atlantis begins here, and the ending to this issue is so awesome. I don't want to spoil anything, but fans of this series will love how it turns out. This has the potential to be an incredibly unique and epic story line, and I have a good feeling it will hit its mark.

Overall, I highly recommend this issue of Aquaman. You won't regret it.

In realtà Aquaman non ha avuto moltissimo spazio nella League, per cui ampliare gli orizzonti creando un incrocio specifico con la sua serie - considerando che l'autore è lo stesso - mi sembra un'idea valida. E il crossover (per fortuna) sarà sempre parte integrante della serialità, finché non diventa invasivo (non mi pare che sia così), ben venga.

Amare una casa editrice ed i personaggi che ha creato non vuol dire difendere a random qualsiasi cosa faccia: a me i crossover piacciono ed adoro sia la Justice League che Aquaman, ma il trucchetto è vecchio e smentisce ancora una volta le dichiarazioni di Didio che annunciavano il reboot. Qui non si parla di tie-in o di due punti di vista di una medesima storia, ma di una saga che, per essere letta tutta, costringe chi vuole godersela a comprare due albi (sia negli USA che in Italia, a meno che la Lion non sposti Aquaman, ma ne dubito). Ho capito che siete fieri difensori della DC Comics, e in un certo senso la cosa vi fa onore (da come scrivo può sembrare che io non ami la DC, quando spendo per le loro storie centinaia e centinaia di euro all'anno), ma non si può obiettivamente smentire quanto da me scritto.

E ripeto per l'ennesima volta, onde evitare di urtare l'animo dei fan boy (o, se trovate il termine offensivo, sostituitelo con qualcosa che ritenete maggiormente appropriato), io aspetto con impazienza Throne of Atlantis. Ma si tratta di una saga, dover comprare due albi per leggee come inizia e come finisce è un trucchetto, stop.

è tutto scritto da Johns e disegnato da Reis quindi è come se fosse tutto sulla stessa collana. Il problema non sussiste. è un crossover per modo di dire.

Sì, è vero che c'erano state delle dichiarazioni in questo senso, francamente però non trovo strano che poi si agisca in modo diverso se la situazione lo richiede. Per me non è una questione di principio, nel senso che il primo anno di reboot è stato caratterizzato da pochissime scelte di questo tipo. Era normale, secondo me, che poi le cose cambiassero. Non credo sia un torto nei confronti di nessuno.
E' chiaro che il crossover è uno stratagemma per vendere di più, ma se sviluppato nel modo giusto io non ci vedo niente di strano.. anzi, a me piace.

Assolutamente fan-boy (girl) della DC e dei suoi personaggi, presente.
