Yes Greg, you made it! Finally you’re drawing one of the greatest icons in the history of comics: Batman, and you know what? We’re crazy about it, your collaboration with Scott Snyder is simply amazing! We can’t wait to read the next issues! Everyone keeps asking you this but.. what are your sensations about drawing the Big Bat?

Most of us are exposed at a very young age to BATMAN. I remember making a makeshift utility belt, pinning a towel to my shirt and performing mock investigations all the while fantasizing I was BATMAN! The deep seated love and familiarity that we all share adds a huge kick to drawing him in comic books. I LOVE IT!!!

You and Scott Snyder really look like close friends, it seems it’s so much fun for you spending time and working together: how is your professional relationship? Is it easy for you to fit his narrative style? Snyder has a cute and innocent face, but he writes absolutely creepy stories! XD

Scott is one of the nicest guys I know and I really admire him as a man. He’s a very good writer, but he’s a great guy. Working with him has become very easy since gaining his trust. He was quite nervous early on to give me the kind of freedom I need to do my best work. The other nice thing is that we share many storytelling sensibilities. Working with Scott his fun and exciting and inspiring. We make a great team.

The presence of the bat-family members is quite normal in Batman series nowadays. Do you like drawing them or do you prefer a solitary Batman?

It’s all good fun.

The Owls are haunting Gotham! This mysterious secret society is the main new element in the first relaunch storyline: could you tell us a little bit more about it? If the Owls allow it of course! XD

NO! I’ll be tortured and possibly killed. Scott only LOOKS harmless!. Trust me. He ain’t.

Batman #1 opened with a great sequence, showing also some new takes on the famous Dark Knight’s Rogues Gallery: which Batman villain do you enjoy drawing the most?

They all have great appeal. I’m disappointed I couldn’t get my hands on Penguin!

Hoping the answer to be “forever”, have you already planned how long you will be staying on Batman?

No, I haven’t. But, Scott and I have been talking about possibilities post Court of Owls.

You really are a rock-star in the comic-book industry since the 1990s, and your work with Image Comics marked a whole era thanks to your recognizable style. How do you perceive your long artistic path if you look back at it?

Ever changing and evolving. At the core, I’m the same, but I’ve tried VERY different approaches–especially within my long run on Spawn. Life is about growing. The fact that I’m never satisfied is an asset.

We have the old Spawn comics and we have these all new Batman comics. Both are drawn by Greg Capullo, but at the same time there seems to be something different. Does it depend on the work of Jonathan Glapion? Or, if your style is just evolving, how would you describe this transformation?

Yes and yes. My style changes based on the job. I don’t think every project should be handled the same way. It’s ridiculous to think otherwise. I let the book guide my hand. As for inks, Jonathan is much more refined than Todd when it comes technique. J.G. also adheres to what I give him. Todd has a VERY district (mainly because he breaks so many rules–LOL) style and can’t resist the urge to noodle the shit out of the paper that’s under his pen. If Todd were to ink me on Batman, people would accuse me of drawing Batman like Spawn!

The “New 52” relaunch is the biggest event of the year in the comic-book world. What do you think about about it? There are a lot of Image artists involved in that, it’s great!

It was a ballsy move. I like ballsy. I’m a goddamned wild and untamed SOB. I admire fearlessness. I despise “toe the line” mentality.

How do you feel about drawing for a major publisher as DC Comics? Would you like to make a comparison between the working environment of an independent publisher and a major one?

It’s nothing I haven’t done in the past. At least now I get paid when my work gets reprinted!!!

A lot of your colleagues at DC Comics (Tony Daniel, J.H. Williams III, Dustin Nguyen, David Finch for a while, Francis Manapul, Lee Bermejo..) are also writing their stories. Would that be an interesting experience for you, especially in the mainstream publications?

No. I’m a novice at best. I have SCOTT SNYDER doing the writing. Whaddya think? I’m on crack?

Beside this Batman project, which writer would you like to work with? Or which character would you like to draw?

Phew. Too big a question. It’s have to be a writer that allows me to direct the visuals my way–don’t want to work with anyone who’d have a problem with that.

You are so kind and easy-going with your fans (this interview proves that! XD ): do you believe that a daily contact with your fandom, also on social networks, is very important? It’s becoming easier and easier thanks to the internet!

Thanks, Dude. Well, as you can tell by how long it took me to do this interview, it gets very hard to keep up. I try my hardest to engage my fans – to respect them and let them know they’re appreciated. Modern technology helps make that possible.

Could you tell us something about your future plans?

I never make any.

In conclusion what would you like to say to your Italian fans? Come to Italy and join us a for a pizza! XD

There are two kinds of people. Italians, and those that wish they were.

TRADUZIONE ITALIANA

Tu e Scott Snyder dall’esterno apparite davvero grandi amici.

I Gufi stanno perseguitando Gotham! XD

NO! Verrei torturato e probabilmente ucciso. Scott SEMBRA innocuo! Fidatevi.

No, non ancora.

Cosa pensi a riguardo?

Io ammiro l’audacia. Così come odio rigare dritto.

XD

Ci sono due tipi di persone. Gli Italiani, e coloro che desiderano esserlo.
