Wonder Woman gets more than a new costume in the latest issue of her ongoing series.
The Good
I have to admit, the idea of a Hell that is ever-changing depending on the way Hades is feeling and thinking that day is more than clever; it's kind of brilliant. The story which has placed Wonder Woman at the center of an interesting conflict continues not only to entertain, but also pushed her character to the limit.

We open the eighth issue of WONDER WOMAN to a full page spread of her in a new costume. It is, as Hephaestus states, "archaic," but completely appropriate for Diana who is clearly inspired by her heritage and culture. But this issue is far more than about Wonder Woman getting a new costume -- it's about her journey into Hell to face Hades, defeat him, and bring Zola home.

There are some great scenes shared by Diana and Hermes as well, and there is great banter between them.

WONDER WOMAN #8 continues to be an interesting, fresh and unique take on a classic DC character that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The issue also features the return of artist Cliff Chiang, and it is certainly a welcome return. Chiang captures the movement and action in the issue brilliantly, and fully captures the dark tone and mood of the book in the scenes where Diana and Zola are reunited.

Halfway through the issue is an unexpected twist that I did not see coming -- and I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Bad
Nothing bad here.

The Verdict
While WONDER WOMAN #8 may not be the Wonder Woman story I (and probably many other fans) can get 100% behind, it is certainly an interesting story and provides a completely different take on the character than anything I have ever seen. She's very different, but at the same time; she is still the same Diana.

The cover is very deceiving. On it we see a gun toting Wonder Woman, holding in each hand each of Eros' golden pistols. As for whether or not she uses them, I won't spoil the story for you; but the result is not at all what I expected. I have to congratulate Azzarello on creating and maintaining a level of suspense and excitement that is lacking in so many other superhero books. While this is a good jumping on point (it would be easy to pick up this issue and follow along), if you've never read any of her books, keep in mind that this is a very different take on her character.

There's a distinct theme that's been forming over the issues of the new "Wonder Woman" by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang and it's once more front and center this month. It's the idea that Wonder Woman's had the truth hidden from her over and over again, a direct contrast to the woman whose iconic magic lasso compels people to speak the truth. Past issues had revelations that included the god Zeus being her father and the reality of how the other Amazons were conceived and what happened to the unwanted children of such unions.

This month, Diana discovers the true nature of Hades' underworld and while it's not as shocking to readers as it is to her, it's still another piece of her world that's come tumbling down. She may a woman of two worlds -- the mortal and the divine -- but it's becoming increasingly clear that it's the mortal world where her feet are firmly rooted, even as she continues to consort with the Greek gods. Her confusion ends up making her come across not as naïve, but rather as someone firmly on the side of the audience.

As a result, when "Wonder Woman" #8 plays out, Azzarello brings it all through a natural progression. All of the pieces of this issue are laid out one at a time, and when she makes her final decision on how to try and free Zola from the underworld, her plan both succeeds and fails, depending on how you look at it. It's very much like Wonder Woman to end up in hot water herself as a result of helping someone else; she has always been one of the most selfless heroes at DC. It's also another exciting cliffhanger and that's something this series of "Wonder Woman" in general is great at; that continual "what happens next?" question mark hanging over each chapter.

Chiang's art is a large part of the appeal of "Wonder Woman" right now, too. I love the sharp, deliberate lines that form the title character with her perfectly shaped eyes and ringlet curls or how her outfit comes across much more as armor than merely for show. The reinterpretations of the gods has also been a lot of fun here, and seeing Hermes and Hades here is another reminder of how each one is clearly based on classic mythology but then providing a more modern, clever take on those ideas. The candles on Hades' head might have looked strange from another artist, for example, but here the molten wax paired with the black armor feels right. When a parting shot is aimed at our hero, the body language on Diana moving to deflect the projectile is so smooth that you might actually think you saw her move her bracelet up to keep it away.

"Wonder Woman" is designed to push buttons (last month's issue in particular pushed a lot), there's no doubt. With each new chapter, though, I feel like we're getting a strong through-line of these ideas, that it's all there to specifically align for a greater purpose. It's still one of the most interesting books in DC's New 52 and while some ideas might be a little off-putting, I feel that it's trying to startle its readers even as it's providing more than just shock tactics. I'm curious to see where the title will go next. More importantly, it also answers the question of what sets Wonder Woman apart from the rest of the Amazons; she's better than them, someone for whom you should look up to.

As she walks down the isle to marry Hades, we ask ourselves whether this is really the way Diana would act?
The Good
Who ever thought they would see Wonder Woman in a wedding gown, walking down the isle to meet Hades, no less? Not to mention, willingly. Of all the qualities that Azzarello captures, Diana's honor is probably the best executed in this series. She made an oath to save and protect Zola, and she does. Even if it means walking down the isle and lying to Hades, confessing her love to him.

I say honor because she stands by her promise to Zola, doing whatever it takes and sacrificing her pride in order to protect her. But she does it dishonestly. Would Diana lie? Would she put her sword down? She is a warrior after all; deception and cunning aren't attributes I am used to seeing as part of her nature -- particularly not if it means winning a war; and she is at war with Hades.

Whether it is in character for her to act this way; it's certain that her portrayal here is entertaining. The story is good. The writing is interesting, even if it is different, and even if this isn't the Wonder Woman that we are used to.

Finally, can you really deceive the crown prince of death? And if you do, and he finds out; you might have even bigger problems on your hands.

Tony Atkins does a phenomenal job in this issue taking over for Cliff Chiang; and I did find it funny that Atkins used Azzarello's likeness for the God of War we see at the beginning of the issue -- particularly since some of the dialogue seems to match Azzarello's demeanor perfectly. Atkins' artistic style and Matthew Wilson's colors will not take away from the story when it's collected; the artistic style is similar enough to Chiang's that it won't matter. Atkins does a great job capturing the expressions of these characters and the excitement of the story. His pencis compliment the writing perfectly.

The Bad
The only question I really had about this issue was whether or not the events here are out of character for Diana. Yet, does it matter? Often we see Diana put her cunning and smarts to the side and instead focus on defending her cause in a physical battle of brute force. That's not to say she is unintelligent, it's just that I've never her seen her so deceptive before in all of her past appearances. Is this a bad thing, though? Is it bad to have these changes made to Diana's character? Would she lie? The lie and deception is (in itself) a contradiction to her honor. Is this something she would do in order to beat Hades? Then again, is it for me to judge? If it's a good story should it matter that it feels as though the character has greatly deviated from the way we're used to seeing her act?

The Verdict
This is a great issue, and it has been a consistently great series. Yet; this is not the Wonder Woman we knew and grew up with. This one seems to have many levels to her character, and things are not as black and white as we are used to. So is this a good thing? At this point, it's hard to change. Is the essence of Wonder Woman's book even still the same? Is she still even the same character? Get rid of the costume, and can we really call this a Wonder Woman series? Then again, it's such a great story, so should that really matter? Should continuity really factor into the equation? That's the biggest conflict I had with this issue and with this series as it moves forward.
