Rocket #1 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

Rocket Raccoon stars in the Ocean's Eleven-themed space opera you didn't know you wanted in the debut of Rocket. Dejected and recuperating from the recent "flark up" on Earth, Rocket only wants to crawl into a bottle and drink himself back into good spirits. But an otter from his past (yes, you read that right) has a job for him, and again Rocket finds himself back in the game and pulling jobs for the right reasons. Al Ewing, who does a stellar job of melding noir, science fiction, and comedy, plays this whole thing fairly straight allowing the somewhat bananas story and concept to sink in fully. All in all, this first issue reads like a Gregory McDonald Fletch novel in space and that's quite alright by me. Artists Michael Garland and Adam Gorham commit fully to the visual trappings of each genre being played with here, filling narration heavy homage pages to Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Elizabeth Breitweiser with multi-colored aliens and dingy cosmic bars that look pulled right out of the pages of 2000 AD. Filled with sass, crime, and dames that are also otters, Rocket #1 is a silly but deceptively competent return to the life for our favorite gun-toting furball.

Arkin Torsen

Primo numero carino e interessante.

On the lam and in the gutter, Rocket needs cash – lots of it, and yesterday. That means tommy guns at dawn – as Rocket steals from an interplanetary mobster who makes the Kingpin look like Aunt May! Guest-starring Deadpool, the sad clown of space! Nyah, buy it, see?

Whatever you might have expected from Marvel's latest Rocket Raccoon comic, this isn't it. And that's exactly why Rocket is such a breath of fresh air. The book is weird, silly and perfectly happy to take the character in unexpected directions. Even Al Ewing's general scripting approach, blending hard-boiled, noir-style narration with traditional comic book panels gives Rocket a flavor and style all its own. The showdown between Rocket's team and Technet is amusing, if drawn out a bit too long. But this issue really finds its hook in the ensuing courtroom scene, where Rocket tries to prove his innocence and Ewing takes the opportunity to lampoon everyone's favorite superhero defense attorney. It's all goofy, lovable fun, yet the emphasis on Rocket's connection to former lover Otta helps give the story an added weight. Adam Gorham ties the disparate halves of this issue together, capturing both the zany sci-fi craziness and the relatively more grounded courtroom drama. It's been a long time since Rocket has shone this brightly on his own. -Jesse

The Blue River Score comes, almost, to a close. Rocket has a plan -- a heist that's ripped straight out of your favorite 70s movie. This series reads like Richard Stark books, but with a ton more fun. The use of the panel gutter -- the repetition of it, the noir-like purple prose -- all of it is so perfectly suited to the book. The art strikes the right balance between the cartoony look of All-New Guardians of the Galaxy and the darker look of books like Jessica Jones or Marvel Knights. This book just sings. As mentioned, this is a heist issue, and the backwards momentum of it -- beginning at the end, and then expanding in scope as we move ever backwards -- all the way back to when it was first planned -- and then zip straight ahead. Oh god, the repetition is brilliant and hypnotic. This book would be a fantastic must-read if it weren't a Big Two comic, but since it is, it remains one of the very best limited superhero series to date. It's so spectacular and this is perhaps the best issue of the entire series. -Tara
