Marvel Announces Black Bolt Ongoing As Part Of Expanding Inhumans Line

CitazioneMarvel has announced that the Inhuman king Black Bolt will soon get his very first ongoing series. The new "Black Bolt" ongoing, which was announced via io9, will be written by novelist Saladin Ahmed ("The Crescent Moon Kingdoms") and featuring art by Christian Ward ("The Ultimates").

While the "Royals" ongoing will send Black Bolt and his family to outer space, "Black Bolt" will see the silent leader trapped in a mysterious prison packed with alien criminals. In order to break free, the powerful Inhuman will have to team up with some unlikely allies.

"[H]e's a very compelling guy, because he can't speak," said Ahmed, who will make his comic debut with the series. "He's one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, really. Although we rarely see his power unleashed. It's not like the Hulk's sort of massive beat downs on a regular basis... rarely does he get his powers demonstrated. Nobody knows quite how powerful he is. Which intrigues people. But has not really been explored deeply. Part of his story is that he's always — him and the Inhumans are a real family. And he always has people speaking for him and, you know, we never get deep into his head. That was kind of one of the challenges of working on a solo title."

Ahmed says he gave a lot of thought to pitching to Marvel, and was intrigued when they offered him the "Black Bolt" series. "[A]t the same time I had a back pocket pitch about incarceration, and some other stuff that was missing a piece. And I knew that the co-star of this [pitch] book was Crusher Creel, the Absorbing Man — it was a book about being locked up, basically. But I only had these very dim concept of this project, I didn't know who the real star was. So when Marvel came to me and said, 'Hey, would you consider doing a Black Bolt book?', for plot reasons I can't get into, it happened to sync up really well. This kind of nascent idea of a prison book I had. And they're picking me for the Black Bolt book ended up linking really well for reasons that will only become apparent to the readers once we're amidst the plotline."

In addition to Absorbing Man, Ahmed added that there are a "few familiar faces that may pop up" in the series.

"Black Bolt" #1 will arrive in stores in spring 2017.

:lolle:

Black Bolt #1 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Justin Partridge; 'Rama Rating: 9 out of 10):

The enigmatic Midnight King of the Inhumans gets a solo series to match in the debut of Black Bolt. Betrayed and jailed, Black Bolt now finds himself stripped of his station and inhabiting a nightmarish prison housing the worse the universe has to offer. Author Saladin Ahmed throws us into the thick of Black Bolt's new status quo with poetic narration, a frenetic prison fight set piece, and a gloriously weird cliffhanger that calls readers deeper into his emerging story. Artist Christian Ward proves the perfect visual style for his surreal science fiction prison tale, rendering the king's new home as a shifting mass of Kirby tech overseen by a creature that would give Grant Morrison the heebie-jeebies made complete with lavish inky colors that sell the mystery and grandeur of alien architecture. Though the Inhuman titles have had a rocky win/loss record as of late, Black Bolt #1 looks to be just the home run they need in order to shift the odds in their favor.

Saladin Ahmed has come up with a good idea for a comic book series, but it may not be a good fit for the king of the Inhumans. Stepping away from the other Inhumans, Black Bolt finds himself locked away in a maximum security prison on the other side of the universe. That's a great set up and this book feels very different from an ordinary Marvel title. The problem is that Ahmed attempts to keep Black Bolt as a remote figure in his own comic. What little narration there is comes in the third person, so we're only getting a secondhand account of what Black Bolt is thinking and feeling. That creates a distance between the reader and the character that the story never fully manages to close. Christian Ward's art is appropriately moody and it helps give the book its own artistic identity. In interviews, Ahmed has mentioned that he came up with this pitch for the Absorbing Man before reworking it for Black Bolt. Absorbing Man appears in this issue as a supporting player and he immediately gives the book more life. Somehow, I suspect this would have been an even better comic if Ward had been allowed to go with his original pitch. -Blair

Non conosco Ahmed, ma direi che ha fatto un buon primo numero. Niente di eccezionale per ora, ma la continuerò sicuro almeno per qualche numero
