MARVEL's AMERICA CHAVEZ Gets Her Own Title In 2017



Ms. America - a.k.a. America Chavez - is going solo in 2017 with an ongoing Marvel title. Announced at Marvel's "retailers-only" panel at New York Comic Con, the upcoming series - simply titled America - will feature covers by the character's former artist on Young Avengers,  Jamie McKelvie (with colorist Matt Wilson). No details on the rest of the creative team are known at this time.

Originally created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta based on a previous Miss America for 2011's Vengeance series at Marvel, Miss America Chavez went on to be a member of the team books Young Avengers and the current Ultimates title.

Interestingly, back in July Casey and Dragotta announced a very similiar-sounding character - America Vasquez - to star in an upcoming 2017 creator-owned title at Image Comics, All America Comix.

America #2 (Published by Marvel Comics; Review by Pierce Lydon; 'Rama Rating: 3 out of 10):

It didn't take long, but this book is already a mess. Gabby Rivera grossly mishandles her main plots and her subplots, turning the pacing of this book into a whirlwind of ineptitude. Rather than having the plotting flow organically from the previous issue, the events of this book are almost like vaguely related non-sequiturs, and the main conceit of the tile is all but lost under the deluge of stuff happening with little context for what's actually going on. It's one thing to misdirect your audience. But this issue is just confusing when it means to be compelling. And the confusion causes Rivera's penchant for one-liners to not play as well, either. The art doesn't help - while Ming Doyle and Joe Quinones are both great artists in their own right, their styles don't really mesh well together as their approach to rendering the titular hero is markedly different. Jose Villarrubia's colors were inconsistent in the first issue and his his flat approach continues to be just that - flat. America has suffered a massive drop off from its first issue because it isn't solidifying its identity in a meaningful way through the writing or art.

Miss America continues her journey toward self-realization in the stylish-but-jumbled America #3. Writer Gabby Rivera downshifts considerably in the first half of this new installment, letting readers in on America Chavez's childhood as she attempted to glean a family and culture from various families and groups around this world. This stuff is truly top-notch and allows Rivera to reveal a new softer side of America, one stripped of all her tough guy posturing. However, once the dimension hopping starts back up America #3 starts to feel put upon and forced and that's only exacerbated by Rivera's choppy, feverishly paced scripting that quickly leaves readers behind and cares little about them catching up. The art, however, is still as gorgeous as ever as Joe Quinones, Joe Rivera, and Jose Villarrubia are joined by Stacey Lee and Jordan Gibson, giving the art the same slickly-rounded look, but with an extra level of detailing this issue. While still packing the same day-glo-colored punch with the art, America #3 is still a solid read, though a bit more scattered than I would like.
