The worst thing you could've said about Aquaman #1 was that after an issue of innovation and bold new ideas/directions, it ended with the same old Black Manta cliffhanger. Much of this Aquaman/Black Manta fight does run off old steam, heavily recapping the grudge between the two, but this issue is constantly asking us (and the characters themselves) to think of something new in this rivalry. The only real disappointment is having an artist change so early on. Brad Walker put an enormous emphasis on individuality in his issue, and while Scot Eaton can't handle that differentiation as smoothly as Walker, this issue isn't really asking him to. Eaton is traditional superhero artist who draws a pretty good fight scene. The "new" that this story promises will largely have to wait for the future, but this is still a fun issue in itself and is promising for the series overall.. –Levi

Following Black Manta's violent attack on the Atlantean Embassy, the U.S. Government has closed all access to the embassy. So, we get an issue of Mr. Curry Goes to Washington, as Aquaman hopes to sort this all out. The portrayal of Atlantean/human relations is always tense, with such anger built up on both sides - just ready to explode at any moment. It's evocative of much of our real world troubles, but like a good Planet of the Apes movie, just off-center and wacky enough to still be entertaining as well as incisive. Philippe Briones is a natural tonal fit with this book's other artists, and may just do the best character expression work of the three. Who knew Aquaman: Political Drama could be such a thrilling series idea? -Levi

Aquaman #3 (Published by DC Comics; Review by Pierce Lydon; 'Rama Rating: 5 out of 10):

Dan Abnett pushes Aquaman in a more bureaucratic direction as Arthur and Mera head to the United States White House to meet with the President. When Abnett digs into the bureaucracy, it feels real, like a scene you might see in House of Cards but it's not terribly interesting and that's because we know so more information than the characters do. He tries to balance this with N.E.M.O.'s recruitment of Black Manta gone awry, but the fact of the matter is that this issue just doesn't pack much of a punch. That's certainly not artist Doug Briones' fault, though. The whole issue is well-rendered despite there not being too much going on. The panel choice and pacing is effective and Briones doesn't take many chances. But that's to be expected with a script that's mostly just characters standing around talking.

i disegni meritano molto.

We are called Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak. Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced. Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed. Weaknesses like... emotions, pain. You will become like us. You will be upgraded.

We're all searching for enlightenment.
But what is light?
Different for everyone. But everyone looking.

See what we want to see.
No matter how small...or big we are.

Aquaman #4 (Published by DC Comics; Review by David Pepose; 'Rama Rating: 8 out of 10):

Perhaps it's not surprising that Aquaman might be quickly overlooked amongst all of DC's spotlight on "Rebirth" and the Suicide Squad film, but with politics also in full swing, it feels like Dan Abnett and Philippe Briones' take on Arthur Curry might be the most interesting superhero book on the stands. In a world of clashing extremes, it's a very nice twist for Abnett to have Aquaman be the Charles Xavier-esque presence who wants to bring people together rather than have them tear each other apart. Yet with someone trying to start a war between Atlantis and the surface while Arthur surrenders himself to U.S. custody, there's a fun mystery and tension bubbling up, which threatens to boil over when Mera breaks her husband out of the clink. Briones, meanwhile, reminds me a lot of Paul Pelletier in terms of his character designs - his panel-to-panel compositions aren't always the flashiest, but panels like Commander Murk fighting underwater Special Forces shows he's got some serious potential. While this book occasionally drags with its subplot - a shadow villain group called N.E.M.O. can't help but seem a little goofy in this post-Pixar world - I think still waters run truly deep with this run of Aquaman.

In Aquaman #4, Atlanteans have their chance to prove to the surface-world that they can be a peaceful people. Instead, a series of bad circumstances lead them to fail at that goal at every turn. It's a purposefully frustrating issue, as you're just begging for one thing to go right for the Atlanteans. As effective as that tone is, the events do get a little overly ridiculous at points, and Mera is one character who hasn't been portrayed as anything more than a lit fuse ready to explode. Artistically, the book suffers from inconsistent body proportions and some sloppy looking panel layouts that break any flow of storytelling. Dan Abnett's core idea for the book continues to be enough to propel this book, but it's starting to suffer from story slowdown and artistic problems. -Levi
