Marvel seems intent on growing Squadron Supreme into a franchise all its own this year. Writer Chuck Wendig delivers a story much in the same vein as J. Michael Straczynski's Superman: Grounded storyline, as Hyperion travels the American heartland in hopes of reconnecting with ordinary people and reclaiming his humanity. The execution is a bit stronger than in Grounded, but not enough to make this series stand out among Marvel's many other superhero titles. The main problem is Wendig's decision to keep the title character at a distance, instead framing the issue from the perspective of a teenage runaway named Doll. Hyperion himself becomes almost incidental to the story, which, despite a blatant Mad Max homage late in the game, doesn't really pack the scope necessary for a hero of Hyperion's stature. Nik Virella's art is attractive, though. Virella brings a very laid-back quality to her pages while showing an ability to render the weirder and more outlandish elements Wendig throws her way. -Jesse

There is real potential in a story like Hyperion #1 but unfortunately the elements introduced in this first issue mix like Friday night and homework. The first installment find's Marvel's Superman homage on a cross country trip with a runaway hipster and an evil circus after them. Although the narrative runs smoothly, Chuck Wendig has definitely stacked the deck against himself in making this many foreign elements work and for the first issue they all really fall short. This is especially the case with the titular character gets so little time to shine. The shining light here is artist Nik Virella who keeps the story grounded with a style that's somewhere between Ramon Perez and Charlie Adlard. Although it isn't time to give up the ship, Hyperion #1 really starts things off at a disadvantage.
